OSHAWA, Ont. – On what looked like a mismatch on paper, turned out to be anything but on the court as the first place Durham College men's volleyball team (13-2) needed five sets to knock off a pesky Algonquin Thunder (1-15) squad.
It was a Jekyll and Hyde type of night for the Lords as they traded sets back and forth with the Thunder. Luckily in the fifth set, Durham looked like the defending OCAA east region champions as they pulled off a 15-9 victory highlighted by back-to-back kills by
Andrew Watson (Uxbridge, Ont.).
Watson would finish the night with a team-high 18 kills, all set up by
Rory Langley (Uxbridge, Ont.) who had 41 assists.
At the net,
Nick Coleman (Brooklin, Ont.) gave the Thunder's offence problems all night as he hammered down 13 blocks. His season-high going into tonight's match was six.
Erik Janssen (Hampton, Ont.) and
Harrison Wood (Nebraska, US) combined for 20 kills and eight blocks.
Defensively,
Braydon Rodgers (Leaskdale, Ont.) led Durham with 21 digs.
Durham remains in a tie with the Seneca Sting for top spot in the OCAA east region standings with matching 13-2 records. The two-teams will square off in Oshawa on February 11, the Lords' regular season home finale.
The Lords will conclude their Ottawa road trip on Saturday against the La Cite Coyotes. Game time is 3 p.m.
