Lords claim sixth straight victory heading into provincials

NORTH YORK, Ont. - The Durham College women's soccer team extended their current win streak to six on Wednesday night with a 1-0 win over the OCAA east leading Seneca Sting.

Finishing the season with a record of 9-2-1, the Lords achieved nine wins in a season for the first time since 2009.

"It was a positive result for us going into the provincial championship next week," said Lords head coach Alex Bianchi. "All the games next week are going to be close games with quality teams like Seneca. We're excited with the opportunity to go back to the provincial championship for the second year in a row and hope to build on what we learned last year."

With the Sting allowing just two goals this season heading into the regular season finale, the Lords dominated possession and scoring chances versus the stout defensive minded opponent.

Vanessa Juras (Ajax, Ont.) came close to opening the scoring in the early going, with an incredible effort off a corner, but her kick hit the top of the crossbar.

Madison Haigh (Bowmanville, Ont.) quickly followed up with another chance shortly after, but her shot was well saved by Seneca goalkeeper Raven Edwards-Dowdall.

Haigh, however, would not be denied as she gave the Lords the lead just before the break after her long range effort found the back of the net. Durham led 1-0 at halftime.

The second half didn't see many chances for either sides as neither keeper was tested enough to see a change in the score.

Seneca showed some late pressure, but the Lords' defence and goalkeeper Jenna King (Ajax, Ont.) stood firm to claim a seventh clean sheet of the season.

Durham will now return to North York next week to participate in their provincial quarter-final game as part of the OCAA women's soccer championship presented by belairdirect. The tournament, hosted by Seneca College, is set to run from Oct. 25-27.

Overall Record: 10-5-1 (W-L-D)
Conference Record: 9-2-1

Next match: Thursday, Oct. 25 • North York, Ont. (OCAA quarter-final - opponent TBD)
