Lords defeat national champions with a walk-off home run

OSHAWA, Ont. – Logan Stewart of Lindsay, Ont. hit a walk-off home run as the Durham College baseball team swept their doubleheader against the defending national champion Fanshawe Falcons on Saturday afternoon at Kinsmen Civic Memorial Stadium.

Trailing Fanshawe 8-7 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Stewart hit a two-run home run to give the Lords their third conference victory of the season. For Stewart, it was his second home run on the day as he hit a solo shot in the Lords 8-2 game one victory.

"It was pretty special," said Stewart following the game. "I haven't done that too many times in my career. Playing for the Oshawa Juniors and here for the last two years, I have got used to the park and I gave it my all."

Stewart was 5-for-8 at the plate with four RBI and three runs scored. In game two he was a single shy of hitting for the cycle.

"It's just a great feeling. We battled all day so it was good coming out with the two wins."

Things looked bleak heading into the bottom half of the eighth inning for Durham trailing Fanshawe 8-4, but a two-run RBI single by Brodie Harkness (Bowmanville, Ont.) got the rally started.

Harkness pitched the complete game in the opening victory, allowing two Fanshawe unearned runs in the top of the sixth inning. The veteran surrendered just five hits and no walks while striking out six.

Eric Beharri (Burlington, Ont.) and Braden Weir (Whitby, Ont.) each had multi-hit games with three and two respectively.

In game two, Beharri would get the win on the mound pitching the eighth inning, coming in to relieve starter Alec Brown (Bowmanville, Ont.) who allowed four runs (three earned) in seven innings of work. Beharri was also the DH in the game as he racked up three more hits giving him six on the day.

The Lords will not have much time to celebrate the victories as they take on the OCAA champion St. Clair Saints on Sunday starting at noon. The Saints are 5-1 to start the year and ended up splitting with the Humber Hawks on Saturday.
