OSHAWA, Ont. – Harrison Wood (Uxbridge, Ont.) and
Erik Janssen (Hampton, Ont.) were dominant for Durham College, but weren't able to lift the men's volleyball team to victory as they came up short on Thursday.
In his final game this season with the Lords, Wood finished with 17 kills and two blocks. Janssen, who was this week's OCAA and CCAA athlete of the week, continued his tear by matching his career high of 26 points with 21 kills, two aces and three blocks.
Durham lost the opening two sets 25-22 and 25-20, looking like both squads were poised to be swept, but they bounced back.
The Lords won 25-22 and 26-24 to force the fifth and final set.
Unfortunately, they trailed when the teams traded sides and weren't able to get within more than two points of the Colts who won 15-12.
Centennial's offence was led by Jordan Saddler, who had 16 kills. Sev Libramonte finished with 11 kills.
Notable performances for Durham came from first-year outside hitter
Aaron Banga (Oshawa, Ont.) who finished with four kills, an ace and two blocks, plus
Lucas Pichl (Cobourg, Ont.) who had a match-high five blocks – alongside six kills.
Thursday night's loss proves to be big in the standings as the Lords and Colts are now tied for third in the east region, trailing the undefeated Georgian Grizzlies and George Brown Huskies for the top spots.
Next semester the Lords open against the Huskies on January 17, followed by their first home game of 2018 against the Grizzlies on January 23.
