Dimeji scores 1,000th point in Lords home opener victory

Box Score OSHAWA, Ont. – In the third quarter of Sunday's Durham College men's basketball home opener, Malton's Funsho Dimeji scored his 1,000th point in the OCAA.

He finished with 26 points in the Lords 83-59 victory over the Canadore Panthers, needing only 20 to reach 1,000. His 26 point total was just three off his career-high of 29, which he achieved with Loyalist on Feb. 6, 2015 against George Brown and Nov. 27, 2016 with Durham.

"I mean, it feels great to have something like that under your name," said Dimeji. "People did not think I was going to even play college ball coming out of high school, so it feels great to accomplish something like this."

He scored 50 points with the Humber Hawks in 2012-13, 630 points with the Loyalist Lancers from 2014-16 and has 326 with the Durham Lords – so far.

Alongside Dimeji, Brandon Halliburton (Brampton, Ont.) and Shomari Maloney (Dallas, T.X.) came out flying to open the season with 10 points a piece in the opening half. The Lords led by as much as 11 points in the first half, but the Panthers clawed back to cut the deficit to three by halftime as the scoreboard showed a 31-28 lead for the hosts.

The Lords were on fire offensively in the third quarter putting up 32 points in the 10-minute period of play alone, with 13 coming from Halliburton and 14 from Dimeji.

Highlighted by an incredible 26 point, nine rebound and two steal performance by Dimeji and 30 points from Halliburton, the Lords picked up the 83-59 win to open conference play.

Durham have only a couple days to rest as they will host the Centennial Colts on Tuesday, Oct. 24 in Oshawa.

The Lords will look to bounce back from dropping both regular season meetings with the Colts during the 2016-17 season.
