BADMINTON NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP: DAY 1 RECAP

TORONTO - CCAA Female Player of the Year Olivia Lei (OCAA, Humber College) continues to be the class of the Women's Singles division, going 3-0.

Women's Singles

Lei picked up straight-set wins over OCAA Host, ACAC and ACAA. Takeisha Wang (ACAC, Concordia University of Edmonton) and Helen Cheung (PACWEST, Vancouver Island University) are each 2-1. Wang's lone loss was to Lei while Cheung fell to Wang.

Men's Singles

The first day of competition ended with two played going undefeated. Nicky Aung (OCAA Host, Seneca College) opened the championship by defeating the Men's Player of the Year, Owen Kurvits 21-16, 21-10 (OCAA, Redeemer University College) before defeating both ACAA and ACAC Wildcard in straight sets. Equally impressive on Day 1 was reigning CCAA Bronze Medalist Graydon Robb (PACWEST, Vancouver Island University) who went 3-0 in wins over ACAC, ACAC Wildcard and ACAA. Sitting at 2-1, Kurvits is very much in contention for a spot in the semi-final with wins over ACAC and ACAA to go with a loss against Aung.

Women's Doubles

Phuthita Nilyok and Chloe Rowe (OCAA, Humber College) completed Day 1 undefeated. The duo hold wins over ACAC, ACAA and OCAA Host. Nilyok captured a CCAA silver medal last year in Mixed Doubles while Rowe is in her first season. Christine Nguyen and Rachel Nham (OCAA Host, Seneca College) went 2-1 with wins over ACAA and ACAC Wildcard. Nham is a reigning CCAA silver medalist in Women's Doubles. Also at 2-1 is Rachael Smillie and Cecilia Wolski (ACAC, Concordia University of Edmonton) who picked up wins over PACWEST and ACAC Wildcard).

Men's Doubles

Ryan Chow and Adam Dong (OCAA, Humber College) finished Day 1 with a 3-0 record with wins over ACAA, OCAA Host and a thrilling three-set win over ACAC 23-21, 12-21, 21-12. The duo are the reigning CCAA Champions with Dong also capturing a CCAA Championship in Mixed Doubles in 2015 (with Tracy Wong). Three teams sit at 2-1 in Andy Ko and Imran Wadio (ACAC, NAIT), James Foster and James Qiu (PACWEST, Vancouver Island University) and Raman Kumar and Azam Mohammad (OCAA Host, Seneca College).

Mixed Doubles

Kai-Li Huang and Nicholas Roque (ACAC, NAIT) top the standings after Day 1, going 3-0 with wins over OCAA, ACAC Wildcard and PACWEST. The duo never dropped a set. Sitting in a tie for second at 2-1 is the team of Melissa Liew and Chris Wan (PACWEST, Vancouver Island University) who had wins over ACAC Wildcard and ACAA. Liew is searching for a fourth CCAA medal to go along with a trio of silver medals. The second team in the second-place deadlock is Yan Zhou and Vinson Wong (OCAA, Seneca College) whose lone loss came against ACAC.
