HILLMANS WIN BRONZE AS GEORGIAN BADMINTON TEAM COMPETES AT PROVINCIALS

KITCHENER, Ont. - The Georgian Grizzlies badminton team took part in the 2020 OCAA Badminton Championships on Feb. 13 and 14 hosted by Conestoga College in Kitchener, Ont.

Five Georgian student-athletes qualified for the event after placing in the top three in their discipline at the regionals which were held at Georgian College earlier this month.

The women's doubles team of Kiersten & Paige Hillman had a very solid round robin finishing with a 4-1 record to sit in second place in pool play.

The sisters from Bracebridge battled hard but fell to the duo of Maeyen Chua and Helen Ngu from Fanshawe College in the semi-finals 2-0 (21-15, 21-16).

In the bronze medal match, the Hillmans rebounded with an incredible effort as they faced the duo of Shuya Huang and Danna Biboso representing George Brown College.

Kiersten and Paige were able to come through winning the match in three tough sets 2-1 (21-15, 20-22, 21-16) to capture the bronze medal and finish in third place.

It's the third straight year Georgian's women's doubles team has won the bronze medal at provincials as the Hillman's have followed in the footsteps of Courtney Brewer and Michelle Kozlowskyj who earned a bronze medal in each of the previous two seasons.

Jessica Maher finished in fourth place in the women's singles pool play as she went 2-3 in the round robin. The Tottenham, Ont., native found a tough opponent in the semi-finals as she fell to undefeated Huyen Le from George Brown College 2-0 (21-4, 21-4).

Maher then battled hard for a bronze medal but fell in a tough match 2-0 (21-16, 21-15) to Glyvette Etis from Fanshawe College to finish fourth at the event.

Georgian's mixed doubles team of Dan Hong (Angus, Ont.) & Gurkehar kaur Kalra (India) also competed at the championships but went without a win, finishing in sixth place overall.
