HUMBER 6, DURHAM 3

OSHAWA, Ont. - The Durham College men's baseball team failed to close out their OCAA season opener on Tuesday night as the Humber Hawks scored five runs in the seventh inning to win by a final score of 6-3.

The Lords took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning with two runs scored, but the Hawks stormed back with a five run seventh inning to take a 6-3 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, the Lords failed to produce any runs as the Hawks earned their first win of the year.

Durham College starting pitcher Ryan Norris (Oshawa, Ont.) pitched a gem as he went five innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out five Hawk batters.

Veteran Dale Valade (North Bay, Ont.) suffered the loss with 1.1 innings pitched and allowing all five seventh inning runs.

Michael Cyr (Whitby, Ont.) went 2-for-2 at the plate for Durham while freshmen David Fischer (Oshawa, Ont.) and Keenan Terwillegar (Enniskillen, Ont.) were both 2-for-4.

The Lords will be back home on Thursday night as they host the George Brown Huskies at 7 p.m. Durham College alumni Kyle MacKinnon and Gary Rose are the coaches of the Huskies, who are in their first year back in collegiate baseball.

OSHAWA, Ont. - The Humber Hawks men's baseball team opened the 2013 season in dramatic fashion as they came back from a 3-1 deficit in the seventh and last inning to win 6-3.

The Hawks, who had their opening game delayed as Sunday's game against Seneca had to be rescheduled due to field concerns, started slow but finished strong.

Durham opened the scoring against Humber's crafty lefty James Byrnes, and led 1-0 after the first. Humber responded in the second with a run of its own, with a RBI from veteran Richard Rausch, and that is how it stood until the sixth inning.

The host Lords seemed to put the game out of reach with a two-run inning, forcing the Hawks to try and respond down 3-1 with three outs to go. And respond they did.

Humber scored twice quickly and had men on second and third with just one out. A walk loaded the bases for Will Adams. Adams promptly belted a single, scoring two and handing the Hawks its first lead. They tacked on another and Andrew Hyde road this three-run lead home for the mound win.

Humber will take to its home field of Connorvale Park on Thursday night for its home opener. The Hawks will entertain the Seneca Sting, with the first pitch being thrown at 7 p.m.
