Harkness ties OCAA record as Durham sweeps Seneca

AURORA, Ont. – The Durham College baseball team cruised to a pair of victories to start OCAA conference play as they swept their doubleheader against the Seneca Sting Friday night.

Alec Brown got the start for Durham in game one and looked to be in midseason form as he went the distance, allowing only two hits while striking out seven. Not to be outdone, Brodie Harkness was just as impressive in game two as he struck out 13 Sting hitters on the way to a five-hit complete game victory.

With his 13 K performance, Harkness matches the OCAA single game strikeout record, joining the record book with Kyle Breitner of St. Clair (2013) and Francisco Mata of Seneca (2014). His previous game-high in OCAA conference play was eight.

Despite stranding 18 runners on base, the Lords offence managed to put up 17 runs over the course of the two games.

Durham's offence put up 12 hits in game one and took advantage of six Seneca errors. Logan Stewart had a big game going 3-for-4 with four RBI and one run while 2015-16 Durham College freshman athlete of the year Jake Legros was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Michael Chilvers reached base on all five plate appearances with three walks and two hits.

In game two, Spencer Edwards crossed the plate three times while Jordan D'Amico had a two hit night and drove in a run.

Kadeev Bembridge combined to go 2-for-6 with four runs and three RBI in the two games.

Durham will turn their attention to Sunday afternoon when they host the George Brown Huskies in their 2016 home opener at Kinsmen Civic Memorial Stadium. First pitch at the ballpark is 1 p.m.
