TECUMSEH, Ont. – St. Clair College (Windsor) outlasted Fanshawe College (London) for a 6-5 win Friday afternoon at Lacasse Park in Tecumseh to set up the semi-finals at the OCAA Men's Baseball Championship presented by belairdirect.
The teams traded runs in the first inning before St. Clair took a 2-1 advantage in the second inning. St. Clair increased its advantage to 3-1 in the third inning but Fanshawe would not go away pulling to with a run at 3-2 in the fourth inning. The Saints seemed to take control afterwards with two runs in their half of the fourth and adding an insurance run in the fifth holding a 6-2 advantage going into the final two innings. Fanshawe showed its resolve and scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning and put the tying run at third base. But St. Clair shut the door for the win after Garik Godard (Belle River) came in for the final out on the mound.
Saints starting pitcher Kyle Breitner (Mississauga) got the win after 6 1/3 innings of work allowing three runs on seven hits but struck out nine Fanshawe batters. Centrefielder Carson Burke was named St. Clair's Player of the Game with a single, double and scored a pair of runs to go with an RBI. Kevin Dion (Newmarket) and Austin Oulds (Chatham) each also had a pair of hits for the Saints.
Carlos Arteaga (London) was Fanshawe's Player of the Game with a pair of singles and scored two runs while playing a nice defensive game at shortstop.
St. Clair will now face Humber at 6:30 p.m. Friday night in the semi-finals with a berth in the gold medal final at stake. Fanshawe will play immediately against Durham at 4:45 p.m. in an elimination game.
