DION HEADLINES OCAA MEN'S BASEBALL AWARDS

OSHAWA, Ont. - St. Clair College's Kevin Dion (Newmarket) is the 2018 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Men's Baseball Player of the Year. He received the award in a ceremony held in Oshawa, Ont., on Thursday evening.

The fourth-year player was near the top of a number of offensive categories this season with 25 hits, 17 runs, 15 RBI and 34 total bases. Dion had a .368 batting average, an on-base percentage of .434 and a .500 slugging percentage. He only struck out eight times in 68 at bats. Dion is also an OCAA All-Star.

Ty Armstrong (Thorndale) of Fanshawe is the OCAA Rookie of the Year. The shortstop was 11th among OCAA players with a .347 batting average. He recorded a team-high 17 hits while contributing 10 runs and eight RBI in 18 games.

The OCAA Batting Champion is Andrew Thomson (Brampton) of Humber. In what was an exciting race to the end, Thomson batted .422, one point ahead of his closest rival. He was 19-for-45 with five doubles and a home run.

Durham's Alec Brown (Oshawa) is the OCAA Pitcher of the Year. The fourth-year hurler was among the league leaders with 39.2 innings pitched, showcasing a stellar 2.12 ERA. His 38 strikeouts were a league-high, and he walked just 15. Brown had a record of 5-1.

Matt Ferreira of Humber is the OCAA Coach of the Year. Humber won its first-ever regular season title with a 17-3 record, knocking St. Clair out of top spot for the first time in the six-year history of OCAA men's baseball. The Hawks scored a league-high 151 runs, and allowed a league-low 47 against.

Also named OCAA All-Stars were Durham's Brendon Dadson (Bowmanville); Fanshawe's Kale Bilger (London); George Brown's Anthony Buonaiuto (Toronto) and Robin Fox-Pappas (Toronto); Humber's Justin Marra (Toronto), Keegan Murphy (Brampton), Rory Pollard (Brampton) and Liam Sutherland (Mississauga); St. Clair's Miguel Cienfuegos (Laval, Que.); and Seneca's Tommy Nguyen (Vaughan).
