MOHAWK 10, SENECA 4

HAMILTON, Ont. - The Mohawk women's softball team pulled into a tie for fourth place with Conestoga, when they took a pair of games from Seneca at Mohawk Sports Park Tuesday, Oct. 3. The Mountaineers beat the Sting 5-2 and 10-4, while the Condors lost two games to Durham, 7-1 and 7-6.

Both Mohawk and Conestoga are 8-10 and have a big showdown in Kitchener on Thursday, Oct. 5.

The top four teams make it to the OCAA Women's Softball Championship.

There was a full moon, so perhaps that explains some weird plays in the first game between the Mountaineers and Sting.

Shelby Hayward of Mohawk was rounding third base heading for a home run when she was interfered with and ended up on the ground. She was awarded home, and the Mountaineers led 1-0 after one inning.

In the top of the second, Brooklyn Armstrong drove in an equalizer for Seneca. Then Mohawk thought they had an inning ending strikeout and they started leaving the field. But there were only two strikes, and and an alert Armstrong kept running and scored to give the Sting a 2-1 lead.

Sarah Bell hit a solo homer the next frame to tie the game at two. Then Emma Knordoff delivered an RBI single to put Mohawk ahead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Hayward had an RBI groundout and an error brought home the fifth run for the Mountaineers.

Aimee Leduc was the winning pitcher, fanning seven batters. Chantal Gendron was tagged with the defeat.

In Game 2, Mohawk started quickly. Hayward had a two run triple and scored herself on a wild pitch. That was followed by another two-run triple by Raeanne Hayward and the Mountaineers led 5-0 after one inning.

In the top of the second, Gendron delivered an RBI single for the Sting's first run. Leduc got that back with an RBI groundout in the second.

There was no more scoring until the bottom of the fourth frame, when OCAA Women's Softball Player of the Week Shanien O'Neill, had a two-run triple and Leduc made it 9-1 with an RBI single.

In the bottom of the fifth, a Seneca throwing error brought home Mohawk's 10th run.

The Sting started to get things going in their half of the sixth inning with Jasmin Namnama, Nicole Pearce and Gendron all drove in runs to make it 10-4 Mohawk, but Andie Bomberry retired Seneca 1-2-3 in the seventh to end the game.

Bomberry came on to relieve Leduc, who won both games. Amanda Van de Graaf was charged with the defeat in Game 2.
