DURHAM DEFEATS HUMBER TO OPEN OCAA CHAMPIONSHIP

BRAMPTON, Ont -- The Humber Hawks and Durham Lords met in the opening game of the 2017 OCAA Softball Championship, with the Lords taking the game by a score of 8-5.

Durham's Emily Hill would match up against Humber's Rachel Matheson-Green on the bump. Both pitchers would go deep in this one, with Hill getting the upper hand earning the win, going the full seven innings allowing four runs. Matheson-Green would take the loss going 5.1 allowing six runs only one of which was earned. The Lords took the lead in the first inning, putting up three runs thanks to RBIs by Sarah Seifried and Marina Christie. Ashley Wallace would tack on another run in the second inning for Durham to make the game 4-0.

Aaliyah Davidson would put Humber on the board in the top of the third inning, driving in shortstop Jenna Hillman from second base with two outs. The Hawks would close the gap to just one run by the top of the fifth as Kate Kostuch hit a solo home run in the fourth, and Sarah Franchetto would drive in the third run for Humber with a sac fly to left.

That score would hold until the bottom of the sixth, as Durham would chase Matheson-Green from the game with runners on second and third. Wallace and Sabrina Stalteri combined to drive in four runs in the inning to give the Lords a five run lead. The Hawks scored two more runs in the top of the seventh but that would be as close they would get, falling to the Lords in seven.
