TORONTO - The following student-athletes have been recognized by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) for their accomplishments during the seven-day period ending Sunday, Jan. 13.
Julian Hinckson Jr.
School: Durham
Program: Protection, Security and Investigation
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Men's Basketball
Hometown: Ajax, Ont.
Hinckson Jr., a PSI major student, finished Durham's only game of the week with a game-high 24 points in 39 minutes of action against the Fleming Knights in a 68-56 win on the road on Jan. 11. His total is a new single game career-high for the third-year forward and well above his 13.8 points per game average in 2018-19. Outside of his impressive scoring output on the night, he had a career-high 18 rebounds, including 14 off the offensive glass, for his fifth double-double of the season. Durham (6-5) is currently in a three-way tie for fourth place in the East Division.
Michel Leblanc
School: La Cité
Program: Vente et représentation
Year of Eligibility: 4
Sport: Men's Volleyball
Hometown: Limoges, Ont.
Leblanc had a great start to 2019, leading La Cité in points in a five-set victory at George Brown on Jan. 13. The fourth-year outside hitter tallied a match-high 22 points on 18 kills, three service aces and one stuff block. He also contributed five digs for good measure. The day prior, Leblanc recored a baker's dozen in kills and one service ace in a four-set win at Seneca. Leblanc is currently the top points producer in the East Division averaging 4.4 points per set. La Cité (8-2) is currently in second place, trailing only first-place Georgian (10-1) for top spot.
Brittany Mason
School: Loyalist
Program: Nursing
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Women's Basketball
Hometown: Ottawa, Ont.
Mason kicked off 2019 in a big way with a stellar performance against the Georgian Grizzlies on Jan. 12. The second-year forward was at the top of her game with a career-high 22 points in the team's 68-47 victory. Mason went 7-of-8 from the line and nabbed 14 rebounds to secure her fifth double-double of the season. With tough defence and smart plays, Mason lead her team by example and dominated under the basket, using her strength to protect the rock and her impressive post moves to breakdown Georgian's defence. Mason is averaging 13.4 points and 9.3 rebounds per game.
Laura Meadows
School: Humber
Program: Hospitality - Hotel and Restaurant Operations Management
Year of Eligibility: 5
Sport: Women's Basketball
Hometown: Woodstock, Ont.
Meadows had a career weekend. She led her team to key back-to-back road wins over St. Clair and Lambton and strengthened Humber's spot atop the West division, remaining tied with Fanshawe at 10-1. Meadows scored a career-high 23 points in a 84-66 victory at St. Clair on Jan. 12, then completed her strong weekend the following day with 15 points in an 87-50 win over Lambton. In the two games, Meadows shot 11-of-17 (65 per cent) from the field and 16-of-20 (80 per cent) from the free throw line. She also grabbed 11 rebounds.
Josh Roberts
School: Loyalist
Program: Public Relations
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Men's Volleyball
Hometown: Conception Bay, N.L.
Roberts and his Loyalist teammates took down the Durham Lords in a hard fought, five-set battle for the team's second consecutive league win on Jan. 11. The 5-foot-10 outside hitter set a new career high during the match, recording an impressive 21 kills. With two service aces and a stuff block, Roberts contributed 24 points, matching his previous total point total set against Seneca in 2017. Roberts is averaging 3.1 points per set this season. A true leader on and off the court, Roberts, contributions extended far beyond offensive stats.
Melanie Wade
School: Fanshawe
Program: Nursing
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Badminton
Hometown: Calgary, Alta.
Wade had a great showing at the Centennial Invitational from Jan. 11-13, finishing in second place in the women's singles competition. The first-year student dominated in all her matches, never dropping a set, before falling to reigning OCAA women's singles champion Ann Hoang of George Brown 21-7, 21-15 in the final. Wade's average set scores in her four victories was 21-12. Wade will now set her sights on securing a berth to provincials at the upcoming OCAA badminton regional tournaments taking place Feb. 1-2 at George Brown and Conestoga.
