OCAA ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

TORONTO - The following student-athletes have been recognized by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) for their accomplishments during the seven-day period ending Sunday, Feb. 3.

Chuot Angou
School: Fanshawe
Program: Police Foundations
Year of Eligibility: 4
Sport: Women's Basketball
Hometown: London, Ont.
In Fanshawe's 92-44 victory over Mohawk on Jan. 31, Angou led all scorers with 28 points, shooting an impressive 63 per cent (10-of-16) from the field, 50 per cent (4-of-8) from three-point range and 100 per cent (4-of-4) from the free throw line. The fourth-year guard added four rebounds, three steals and two assists and had zero turnovers. Angou is currently eighth in OCAA scoring averaging 16.5 points per game. Fanshawe (15-1) has won 11 straight games but have yet to clinch first place in a very competitive West Division. The Falcons visit Lambton (11-7) on Feb. 5.

Tara Aune
School: Sheridan
Program: Kinesiology and Health Promotion
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Women's Volleyball
Hometown: Ajax, Ont.
Aune put up season highs for Sheridan as the Bruins twice battled back from down a set to defeat Redeemer 3-2 on Feb. 1. The third-year opposite contributed a match-high 19 points, including a career-high 16 kills. Aune is in the midst of her best season in Double Blue, and has already established new career bests in kills and points, and is tracking towards new benchmarks in aces and digs. The win was significant for Sheridan (7-9) as it gave the Bruins a two-game edge over Redeemer (5-11) in the West Division standings in the fight for post-season positioning.

Alfred Johnson
School: Fanshawe
Program: General Arts and Science
Year of Eligibility: 4
Sport: Men's Basketball
Hometown: London, Ont.
Johnson recorded his first double-double of the season on Jan. 31 in Fanshawe's 103-69 win over Mohawk. He recorded a season-best 21 points on 10-of-18 shooting while grabbing 10 rebounds. The fourth-year forward is averaging 10.3 points per game, and has hit double figures in scoring in each of his last three games, all Fanshawe victories. Fanshawe (12-4) is currently tied for third place in the West Division, having already secured a post-season crossover berth. The Falcons play a road game against Lambton (9-9) on Feb. 5.

Jennifer Knowles
School: Mohawk
Program: Paralegal
Year of Eligibility: 5
Sport: Women's Volleyball
Hometown: Burlington, Ont.
Knowles played a major role in a couple of huge Mohawk victories this past week. In a four-set win over Niagara on Jan. 30, the fifth-year setter and right side recorded eight kills with a 42 per cent efficiency, 19 assists, four aces and 14 digs. She followed this effort with 10 kills, 30 assists, three blocks and 23 digs in a five-set victory over St. Clair on Feb. 1. Knowles' versatility and veteran leadership has changed the outlook of Mohawk's season. Mohawk (12-4) is currently battling St. Clair (13-3) and Humber (12-4) for playoff seeding in a competitive West Division.

Ramnish Kumar
School: Humber
Program: Fitness and Health Promotion
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Badminton
Hometown: Panjokhara, India
True freshman Kumar rolled through the OCAA West Regional championship men's singles flight, taking the crown in undefeated fashion, not dropping a set along the way. He completed the event with a mark of 5-0, with an average set score of 21-10. His efforts helped Humber take the men's team title at the event. Kumar and his teammates will now take the short trip to the University of Toronto Mississauga from Feb. 15-16 for the OCAA Badminton Championships. Six competitors, including Kumar, will make up the men's singles competition.

David Tshimanga
School: Algonquin
Program: Pre-Technology
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Men's Basketball
Hometown: Montreal, Que.
Tshimanga had another great game in Algonquin's 88-71 loss to Centennial on Feb. 2, shooting 8-of-10 from the field and 6-of-6 from the free throw line to score 22 points for the Thunder. The first-year forward also grabbed five rebounds and notched a steal and an assist. It is the 13th time Tshimanga has scored in double digits this season, and the fourth time he has scored 21 or more points in a game. Not surprisingly, he leads all Algonquin players averaging 14.6 points per game. Algonquin (8-8) has key games against St. Lawrence (5-11) and Loyalist (7-9) on the horizon.
