TORONTO - The following student-athletes have been recognized by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) for their accomplishments during the seven-day period ending Sunday, Sept. 9.
Ashley Black
School: Durham
Program: Human Resources
Year of Eligibility: 4
Sport: Women's Softball
Hometown: Waterloo, Ont.
Ashley Black scored two wins from the bump, while adding a walk-off single in three games played this past weekend. Black picked up both the win and the game-winning hit in Durham's 7-6 nail-biter versus Conestoga on Saturday. The victory marked her 25th career win, which is the most of any Lords pitcher. She followed that up with another victory on Sunday, knocking off St. Clair 10-2. Black allowed just two earned runs, while striking out five in the seven-inning complete game. She also added two hits on four at-bats.
Alec Brown
School: Durham
Program: Sports Administration
Year of Eligibility: 4
Sport: Men's Baseball
Hometown: Bowmanville, Ont.
Alec Brown was stellar on the mound in Durham's 7-1 upset victory over defending OCAA champion St. Clair on Saturday afternoon. Brown pitched a complete game, allowing only three hits and zero earned runs, while picking up six strikeouts in the seven innings of work. In addition, Brown added the lone Lords RBI in the second game of the doubleheader. He followed that up the next day with another strong outing in the batter's box versus Fanshawe. Brown went 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI in the Lords 7-0 win over the Falcons on Sunday.
Zoe Derkach
School: Sheridan
Program: Early Childhood Leadership
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Women's Soccer
Hometown: Brampton, Ont.
A constant threat at the top of the Sheridan formation, Zoe Derkach was instrumental in the Sheridan Bruins taking the full six points in their opening road swing to George Brown and Cambrian last Friday and Sunday. Derkach scored two goals in each contest, leading the Double Blue to 6-1 and 3-0 triumphs. Sheridan lost to Cambrian in both regular season contests last year. With their two victories, Derkach and her Bruins find themselves atop the OCAA provincial rankings with their next match schedule this Thursday also on the road at Conestoga.
Oti Frigole
School: Niagara
Program: Social Services
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Men's Soccer
Hometown: St. Catharines, Ont.
Oti Frigole kicked off his collegiate career in style as Niagara defeated Mohawk 3-2. After going down 1-0, Frigole scored a pair of dazzling goals to pull the Knights ahead of the Mountaineers. After Mohawk drew back even, Frigole skirted past two defenders with some fancy footwork to setup teammate Noah DiEgidio for what would be the game winning tally. Niagara head coach Frank DeChellis was impressed with Frigole's calm approach. "Oti did not look like a first year player today. He fit in very will with the group and worked at the level required to succeed in the OCAA."
Jade Kovacevic
School: Fanshawe
Program: General Arts and Science
Year of Eligibility: 4
Sport: Women's Soccer
Hometown: Acton, Ont.
On Saturday afternoon in the season opener for the Fanshawe Falcons, Jade Kovacevic broke an 18-year OCAA record for most goals in a match, when she scored nine times in a 16-0 home win over the Lambton Lions. The previous OCAA record of seven goals was set by Christine Stoneman of Mohawk in 2000. Kovacevic is now in second place on the OCAA women's soccer career goal scoring list with 58. Used to scoring in bunches, Kovacevic's previous personal best mark for goals in an OCAA match was six.
Aidan Murphy
School: Humber
Program: Sport Management
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Men's Baseball
Hometown: Brampton, Ont.
Aidan Murphy had an incredible start to his OCAA career as a true freshman. Murphy belted a grand slam in a 13-0 win over Fanshawe on Saturday, part of a 3-for-3 performance at the plate with five RBI and two runs scored. Overall in four games this past weekend Murphy had five hits, 10 total bases, six RBI and a slugging percentage of .833 (currently the best in the OCAA). His .417 batting average is third among OCAA players. Not surprisingly, Humber has a 3-1 record atop the OCAA standings, the best start for the Hawks since 2015.
