TORONTO - The following student-athletes have been recognized by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) for their accomplishments during the seven-day period ending Sunday, Oct. 7.
Courtney Gibbs
School: Algonquin
Program: Fitness & Health Promotion
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Women's Soccer
Hometown: Courtice, Ont.
Gibbs netted her third goal of the season last Wednesday against St. Lawrence to pull Algonquin even in the 90th minute, turning a loss into a 2-2 tie. A defeat would have been significant given that the Thunder have now played 55 straight OCAA regular and post-season matches without a loss. Gibbs has taken full advantage of increased minutes with Algonquin this season. The three-time reigning OCAA champions hope to keep their undefeated streak alive with two final regular season matches this weekend, as the Thunder aim for an unprecedented fourth straight provincial title.
Pierre Guoumbas
School: Algonquin
Program: Fitness & Health Promotion
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Men's Rugby
Hometown: Montreal, Que.
Guoumbas earned his first-ever OCAA hat trick, scoring three tries for a match-high 15 points at St. Lawrence last Friday in a 35-8 Algonquin victory. The first-year centre/wing now has five tries on the season, and his 25 points are good for 10th among all OCAA players. Algonquin has won three straight to begin a season for the first time since 2015, having already surpassed its win total from last season. A big East Division showdown looms this Saturday as Algonquin visits Durham, a team which has also won three straight. The winner will have the inside track towards a division crown.
Kaitlyn Hickey
School: Durham
Program: Sports Administration
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Women's Softball
Hometown: Oshawa, Ont.
Hickey, a first-year sports administration student, had a solid week all around. It started in conference play going 4-for-8 with two RBI and five runs scored in Durham's doubleheader sweep of Seneca last Wednesday. She also added a stolen base for good measure. Following that, she was named a championship all-star at the Canadian Collegiate Softball Association (CCSA) national championship in Saskatoon over the weekend for her performance. Hickey helped the Lords return home with a silver medal, the program's best finish at a national championship since 2012.
Reagan Manley
School: Durham
Program: Business
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Men's Baseball
Hometown: Peterborough, Ont.
Manley, a first-year business student, led Durham's offence as the Lords clinched their spot at the OCAA championship by sweeping both doubleheaders against George Brown and Seneca last week. Over the four wins he was 8-for-14 from the plate with two triples, seven RBI and six runs scored. His outstanding week has him now leading the Lords with a .392 batting average and 10 RBI, which has him ranked fifth and seventh amongst OCAA leaders, respectively. Durham plays host to the OCAA championship later this month.
Alyssa Stoddart
School: Fanshawe
Program: Golf and Club Management
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Golf
Hometown: Orangeville, Ont.
Stoddart made Fanshawe history, becoming first Falcons female golfer ever to win the individual gold medal at the recent OCAA provincial championship. Stoddart also led the Falcons women's team to an OCAA title, another first for Fanshawe golf. She not only led every day at OCAA provincials, setting a new Fanshawe record for best three day score (246), but she also topped the leaderboard in four OCAA lead-in tournaments. She now aims to become the first OCAA golfer since 2002 to win both the provincial and national gold medal later this month.
Braydon White
School: Fanshawe
Program: Marketing Management
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Golf
Hometown: Barrie, Ont.
White led wire-to-wire to win the OCAA men's golf individual gold medal at the provincial championship this week, shooting an even-par 213 and setting a new Fanshawe men's golf best three-day record. He also tied for the best round of the tournament, shooting a one-under 70 on opening day. White's individual gold was the first time a Fanshawe golfer had accomplished the feat in 43 years. White also picked up a OCAA men's team silver medal. He now has his sets on a national medal later this month at the Desert Blume Golf Course in Medicine Hat, Alta.
