OCAA ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

OCAA ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

TORONTO - The following student-athletes have been recognized by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) for their accomplishments during the seven-day period ending Sunday, Oct. 14.

Saige Pedis
School: Algonquin
Program: Pre-Health Sciences
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Women's Rugby Sevens
Hometown: Cobourg, Ont.
Pedis scored four tries over the course of four women's rugby sevens matches in Peterborough last weekend. Although there were teammates who scored more for Algonquin, the first-year player was a standout for the Thunder from start to finish. Algonquin outscored its West Division opponents 108-17 to improve to an unblemished 8-0 record, sending a strong signal that they are the team to beat the remainder of the season. The Thunder look to wrap up the East Division title this Saturday in Belleville when they return to intra-divisional play.

Chloe Rowe
School: Humber
Program: Pre-Health Science Pathways
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Badminton
Hometown: Newcastle, Ont.
Rowe accomplished something that is rarely done, and did it in the biggest and first college badminton event of the year. The two-time defending OCAA and national champion won the "triple crown", by taking gold in women's singles, women's doubles and mixed doubles at the Humber Cup this past weekend. The reigning OCAA Women's Player of the Year, who won both of her provincial and national medals in women's doubles, is chasing the elusive golden three-peat in 2018-19. The next scheduled OCAA event is Nov. 3-4 at U of T Mississauga.

Andrew Thomson
School: Humber
Program: Recreation and Leisure Services
Year of Eligibility: 5
Sport: Men's Baseball
Hometown: Brampton, Ont.
Thomson came into play on Sunday a few points back of teammate Brendan Lyons for the OCAA men's baseball batting title. In Game 1 of a doubleheader sweep of Seneca, he went 2-for-4, with two runs scored and two RBI. In Game 2, he secured the title by going 1-for-2 with another run scored and another RBI. Thomson finished with an average of .422, just a single point up on Lyons and 11 points up on the third-place player. Thomson finishes his career with a robust .375 average, and placed himself in the top of almost every Humber career offensive record.

Rahim Thorpe
School: Sheridan
Program: Early Childhood Education
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Men's Soccer
Hometown: Brampton, Ont.
Thorpe netted a hat trick - all within the span of 15 minutes on either side of halftime - and added an assist on captain Sundin Esperence's 69th minute tally, as Sheridan exploded for seven goals in a 7-0 triumph over UTM last Wednesday that kept its Central Division title hopes alive. Thorpe, a first-year striker, now has four goals to begin his young OCAA career. The big showdown for the Central Division crown takes place Wednesday, as Sheridan (5-0-4) hosts Humber (7-1-1) with the winner earning a bye into the OCAA quarter-finals.

Carly Uddenberg
School: Seneca
Program: Early Childhood Education
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Women's Soccer
Hometown: Richmond Hill, Ont.
Uddenberg scored two crucial goals in Seneca's 3-0 win at Algonquin on Saturday en route to the Sting winning the OCAA East Division championship. It was Uddenberg's second multi-goal match of her young OCAA career. The win was extra significant, as it ended Algonquin's streak of 56 consecutive OCAA matches without a regular or post-season loss. Seneca already had a bye into the OCAA quarter-finals as host of provincials, but will now enter the quarter-finals as one of the top three seeds. Seneca hosts a final tune-up against Durham on Wednesday.

Ben Vyfschaft
School: Fanshawe
Program: Fitness and Health Promotion
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Men's Soccer
Hometown: London, Ont.
Vyfschaft scored four goals in Fanshawe's 9-0 win over Redeemer on Saturday, tying the Fanshawe record for most goals in a single match. It was Vyfschaft's third multi-goal match in four appearances. The first-year player finished the regular season with a dozen goals, good for second in the OCAA with a handful of matches remaining. There are no more regular season matches for Fanshawe in 2018, but the Falcons earned a golden ticket to the OCAA championship in Toronto from Oct. 25-27 on the strength of their 9-0-1 and West Division championship.
