TORONTO - The following student-athletes have been recognized by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) for their accomplishments during the seven-day period ending Sunday, Nov. 18.
Althea Boncheff
School: Durham
Program: Environmental Technology
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Women's Volleyball
Hometown: Alliston, Ont.
Boncheff, a second-year environmental technology major, has played a pivotal role in Durham's perfect 6-0 start to the 2018-19 season. Showing incredible improvement from her rookie campaign a year ago, Boncheff recorded a match-high 15 points in Durham's straight sets victory over Georgian on Wednesday. She appeared in all three sets for the Lords, recording 11 kills and four service aces. She now leads Durham in points per set and kills per set, averaging 3.9 and 2.35 respectively. She also ranks first in the province in service aces per set with an impressive 1.24 average.
Tobie Brinkman
School: Redeemer
Program: Social Work
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Women's Basketball
Hometown: Ottawa, Ont.
Brinkman continued her torrid start to 2018-19 this past weekend with her sixth double-double of the season. Brinkman scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in Redeemer's 71-56 win against Sault on Friday. She followed it up on Saturday with 20 points and 10 rebounds in Redeemer's 66-63 overtime victory against Sault to sweep the head-to-head doubleheader. Brinkman has now had six double-doubles in seven games. She sits third in the OCAA in rebounds per game averaging 12.0 and seventh in the OCAA in points per game averaging 17.7.
Liam Butchereit
School: Sheridan
Program: Business Administration Finance
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Men's Volleyball
Hometown: Mississauga, Ont.
A two-time OCAA All-Star libero, Butchereit has made the transition to outside hitter this season, becoming an offensive force to go along with his elite defence. In Sheridan's four-set win over Conestoga on Saturday, Butchereit posted career highs in kills (13), aces (four), and points (17), while still contributing stellar defence with 10 digs. It was a key early season victory for the Bruins, as Sheridan and Conestoga are currently tied for third place in the competitive West Division with identical 3-2 records. Sheridan squares off against undefeated Humber (5-0) on Wednesday.
Christine Fleischer
School: Lambton
Program: Instrumentation & Control Engineering Technology
Year of Eligibility: 5
Sport: Women's Basketball
Hometown: Sarnia, Ont.
Fleischer scored 24 points while grabbing 15 rebounds for a double-double in Lambton's 55-46 win over Niagara on Friday. She also made four blocks and contributed two steals. Fleischer earned a double-double repeat on Saturday in a 70-46 win over Mohawk. She contributed 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while adding seven steals. Fleischer now has four double-doubles on the season. With the two victories, Lambton improved to 5-2, having won four straight. It is quite the improvement from a 2-18 in 2017-18.
Van Hutchinson Jr.
School: Niagara
Program: General Arts
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Men's Basketball
Hometown: Nassau, Bahamas
Hutchinson recorded double-doubles in two games this past weekend. On Friday, Hutchinson fell just short of a triple-double scoring 25 points while adding 10 assists, nine rebounds and four steals in a 100-93 victory over Lambton. The following day, Hutchinson recorded a blistering 56 points to go along with 13 rebounds, four assists and five steals in a 108-101 loss to St. Clair. His points total far surpassed his previous career high of 36, which he set last season against Humber. This marks Hutchinson's fifth and sixth double-doubles in just seven contests this season.
John Stewart
School: Durham
Program: Sports Management
Year of Eligibility: 5
Sport: Men's Rugby
Hometown: Whitby, Ont.
Stewart delivered a player of the game worthy performance in Durham's OCAA gold-medal winning match on Saturday afternoon. Defeating the West Division champion Georgian Grizzlies 21-15 in the OCAA championship final, Stewart came up with big tackles on defence, helping hold back the explosive Georgian offence which led the province in points scored this season. Playing in the crucial No. 8 position, Stewart also was a vital part of the Lords offence, breaking out for several long runs, while scoring Durham's second try of the contest.
