TORONTO - The following student-athletes have been recognized by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) for their accomplishments during the seven-day period ending Sunday, Dec. 2.
Sydney Charvis
School: Sheridan
Program: Police Foundations
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Women's Basketball
Hometown: Mississauga, Ont.
Charvis paced Sheridan to victories over Mohawk and Conestoga this past week, orchestrating the offence to an average of 84 points, while limiting both opponents to under 50. The second-year point guard averaged 17.5 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals in the victories, topping the 20-point mark for the fourth time this season with 22 against Mohawk last Tuesday. Overall, Charvis is averaging 16.4 points per game. Winners of three straight, Sheridan (8-2) concludes the first half of the regular season on Dec. 6 at Niagara (5-5).
Xavier Demers
School: La Cité
Program: Techniques de réadaptation et de justice pénale
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Men's Volleyball
Hometown: Wendover, Ont.
Demers had a great match for La Cité at home against Seneca on Sunday. The second-year setter recorded 40 assists in a five-set loss, while also contributing 12 digs, a dozen stuff blocks, two service aces and one kill totalling 15 points. Demers is currently tied for third among OCAA players with 25 blocks to his credit. Despite the loss, La Cité (6-2) enters the December break near the top of the East Division standings. The Coyotes begin the second half of their regular season on Jan. 12 in a rematch against Seneca.
Hadeza Ismaila
School: Algonquin
Program: Pre-Health Sciences
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Women's Basketball
Hometown: Orleans, Ont.
Hadeza helped Algonquin extend its winning streak to an OCAA-best eight games this past weekend, scoring 14 points and grabbing 11 boards (and a steal and an assist) in a 78-71 outcome against Seneca on Friday, then following that up by scoring 22 and grabbing 12 (and two steals and assists) in a 73-49 win over Centennial on Saturday. Hadeza has been working hard to find her spots offensively and is turning into a beast on the glass, leading all Algonquin players with 76 boards. Algonquin (8-1) is tied with George Brown (8-1) atop the East Division standings.
Leticia Lopez
School: Humber
Program: Kinesiology
Year of Eligibility: 5
Sport: Women's Basketball
Hometown: Toronto, Ont.
Lopez continues to be the top player on Humber (8-1) this season, and led the Hawks to two wins and an eight game winning streak. This past week Lopez poured in 41 points over two games, including a team-high 22 in an 89-83 win over St. Clair on Saturday. She also recorded grabbed 10 rebounds in a 82-44 win over Redeemer on Wednesday and against St. Clair for a pair of double-doubles. She has now upped her points per game average to a team-best 17.6 and has entered the Top 5 in the league. Humber's next game is a rematch with St. Clair (6-3) on Jan. 12.
Jaylan Morgan
School: Humber
Program: General Arts & Science
Year of Eligibility: 4
Sport: Men's Basketball
Hometown: Brampton, Ont.
In his first year of OCAA play, Morgan has been stellar for the undefeated Humber Hawks. This past week, he led Humber to wins over Redeemer and St. Clair, scoring 19 points in each game. He shot an incredible 74 percent from the floor, based on 14-of-19 shooting. Morgan is Humber's leading scorer averaging 16.8 points per game, and is second among all OCAA players with a 62.5 shooting percentage. Humber (9-0) has won nine straight to begin its campaign, and will begin the second half of the regular season on Jan. 12 at St. Clair (4-5).
Chris Parker
School: Fanshawe
Program: Child and Youth Care
Year of Eligibility: 5
Sport: Men's Basketball
Hometown: Toledo, Ohio
Parker scored an exciting three-point buzzer beater to give Fanshawe a thrilling 89-88 road win over Niagara last Friday. The fifth-year shooting guard scored a game-high 27 points, shooting 7-of-13 (54 percent) from beyond the three-point arc. He added seven rebounds, two assists and two steals. Parker is among the OCAA league leaders averaging 25.3 points per game and a 41.6 three-point shooting percentage. Fanshawe (6-3) is in the thick of a competitive race in the West Division, and will close out the first half of its season on Dec. 5 at home against Conestoga (0-9).
