OCAA ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

TORONTO - The following student-athletes have been recognized by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) for their accomplishments during the seven-day period ending Sunday, Mar. 8.

Kingslee D'Silva
School: George Brown
Program: Business Administration
Year of Eligibility: 5
Sport: Men's Basketball
Hometown: Mississauga, Ont.
The last time George Brown won an OCAA men's basketball championship, the other Trudeau was Prime Minister. D'Silva was a major reason why the 43-year drought ended. In front of a sold-out crowd against host Lambton, the fifth-year forward recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds in an 82-65 quarter-final victory on Mar. 6. Two days later in the gold medal game, D'Silva led the Huskies with a game-high 20 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks to lead George Brown to a 78-65 win over Humber. D'Silva was named Championship MVP for his efforts.

Logan Kucera
School: St. Clair
Program: Educational Support
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Women's Basketball
Hometown: Chatham, Ont.
Kucera was named an OCAA Championship All-Star for her strong play at provincials this past weekend on her home court. The third-year guard averaged 17.3 points in three games to help St. Clair earn its second straight OCAA silver medal. Kucera scored a team-high 26 points, shooting 4-of-8 beyond the three-point arc, while adding 10 rebounds for a double-double in the gold medal game on Mar. 8, won by Fanshawe 93-80. She also added four assists. Prior to the competition, Logan was named a West Division First-Team All-Star.

Huyen Le
School: George Brown
Program: English as a Second Language
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Badminton
Hometown: Vietnam
Le capped off her historic season winning gold in women's singles at nationals. The first-year standout took down the defending champion and national Player of the Year Takeisha Wang in a three-set nail-biter. It marked the only time an opponent won a set off Le the entire season. The Vietnam native won all five of her round robin matches to earn the top seed heading into the playoffs. She bounced Olds College's Priyanna Ramdhani in the semis to advance and eventually take home gold. Le finished off the campaign going undefeated and only dropping one set in the process.

Saatvik Mahajan/Faizan Shaikh
School: Seneca
Program: Business/Social Media
Year of Eligibility: 1/1
Sport: Badminton
Hometown: India/India
Mahajan and men's doubles partner Shaikh completed a near flawless season by capturing the national gold medal. The provincial champions went 7-0 at nationals, dropping only one set. This set loss came in the gold medal match where Mahajan and Shaikh rebounded from an opening set defeat to win two straight and the match 17-21, 21-18, 21-11 over All-Canadian Bryce Mason and Jack Ronahan of King's College. The first-year students from India brought Seneca its first badminton national championship since 2017 and helped OCAA capture the team supremacy award.

Pranav Satheesh
School: Conestoga
Program: Project Management
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Badminton
Hometown: India
Satheesh had an impressive run at nationals this past week, returning to Conestoga with the men's singles gold medal. He went undefeated with a record of 7-0 at the competition, winning 14 of 16 sets he played. His rivalry with fellow countryman and defending national champion Ramnish Kumar of Humber concluded in dramatic fashion in the gold medal match, as Satheesh came back to win 18-21, 21-16, 22-20, including a thrilling final set. Satheesh had lost to Kumar in three sets for the provincial gold medal after winning defeating him in three sets in the final at regionals.

Mikhaila Wright
School: Fanshawe
Program: Tourism - Travel Studies
Year of Eligibility: 5
Sport: Women's Basketball
Hometown: London, Ont.
Wright was named Championship MVP at the recently concluded OCAA provincials. The fifth-year guard scored 79 points over three games, including a season-best 36 points in Fanshawe's 83-73 semi-final victory over Algonquin on Mar. 7. In the gold medal rematch the following day against championship host St. Clair, Wright earned a double double with 30 points and 10 rebounds as Fanshawe repeated as OCAA champions with a 93-80 victory. Wright also averaged 4.7 assists and two steals per game during the competition.
