OCAA ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

TORONTO - The following student-athletes have been recognized by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) for their accomplishments during the seven-day period ending Sunday, Oct. 20.

Ashley Black
School: Durham
Program: Emergency Services Fundamentals
Year of Eligibility: 5
Sport: Women's Softball
Hometown: Waterloo, Ont.
Black opened the OCAA championship with a complete game victory over St. Clair, giving up just one earned run, while striking out seven. She went on to appear in relief in Durham's crucial Day 2 win, securing the final out versus St. Clair to reserve its place in the gold medal game. As the starter in the championship final, the League and Championship All-Star helped push the game against Humber into extra innings, striking out 12 Hawks batters through 7 2/3 innings, while giving up just one earned run in the loss. She added two hits and two runs at the plate as well.

Presly Buchanan
School: Humber
Program: Police Foundations
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Women's Softball
Hometown: Guelph, Ont.
Buchanan was named Championship MVP of OCAA provincials, helping lift Humber to its first title since 2013. The third-year player picked up the win in an 11-1 outcome over Conestoga, allowing no runs over six innings of work, striking out four. She also added a triple, driving in a pair while scoring two times. As a designated hitter the following game against Durham she went 3-for-3, scoring a run in a 3-1 victory. In the championship finale against Durham, she added a single, scoring another run while pitching 3 1/3 innings in relief, striking out a pair. Humber won 3-2 in extra innings.

Steven Hough
School: Humber
Program: Sport Management
Year of Eligibility: 4
Sport: Men's Baseball
Hometown: Toronto, Ont.
Hough was named Championship MVP of OCAA provincials, helping Humber secure its second straight gold medal. On Day 1 of the competition, Hough pitched a complete game five innings, allowing no runs while striking out five in a 10-0 win over championship host Durham. Hough got the call again the following day in the elimination gold medal game against Durham, pitching another six innings, allowing just two earned runs while striking out four in Humber's 9-2 win. Overall Hough allowed 12 hits over 11 innings at the championship, while walking only two batters.

Jake Legros
School: Durham
Program: Supply Chain and Operations Management
Year of Eligibility: 4
Sport: Men's Baseball
Hometown: Whitby, Ont.
Legros was instrumental as Durham won silver at OCAA provincials, clinching a berth to the National College Baseball Championship. Taking to the mound on Day 2 of the championship, Legros was stellar over eight innings, allowing one unearned run and striking out five as Durham knocked off second-seeded St. Clair in a 4-1 extra innings upset. In addition to his outstanding pitching, Legros also provided solid defence at third base during the competition and an additional veteran presence in the batter's box recording three hits, one run, and one RBI.

Leah Pedis
School: Algonquin
Program: Massage Therapy
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Women's Rugby Sevens
Hometown: Cobourg, Ont.
The reigning OCAA Player of the Year and League All-Star, Pedis scored four tries and kicked two converts over the course of the final regular season fixture of matches. The third-year back finishes the regular season with 10 tries and a pair of converts totalling 54 points. A multi-dimensional player, her leadership and intensity are just as important as her statistics. Algonquin went 3-1 against divisional rivals on Oct. 19 to finish with an overall record of 9-3, placing second in the East Division final standings. The end result is a ticket to the OCAA championship taking place at Loyalist on Nov. 2.

Adam Waithe
School: Seneca
Program: Liberal Arts
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Men's Soccer
Hometown: Scarborough, Ont.
Waithe had an electrifying day on the pitch in Seneca's OCAA playoff against St. Clair on Oct. 19. The first-year forward had a hat trick in a 13-minute span to propel the Sting to the OCAA championship as Seneca won the match 7-1. The Sting were trailing 1-0. Waithe matched his regular season total in goals in one match against the Saints, having scored three in six matches. Seneca improved on its 2018 regular season record of 3-4-3 in a big way, having won eight straight matches to enter the championship as one of the OCAA's hottest teams.
