DURHAM LORDS HEADED TO CHILLIWACK FOR CANADIAN UNIVERSITY/COLLEGE CHAMPIONSHIP

OSHAWA, Ont. - On May 29 the Durham College golf team will be heading to Chilliwack Golf Club to take part in the 16th annual Canadian University/College Championship.

The tournament is Canada's most prestigious post-secondary golf championship, bringing together the top teams from a variety of university and collegiate leagues across Canada. The Lords will be among the 20 men's teams and 12 women's teams battling for the right to call themselves national champions.

The last time the Lords were represented at nationals was in 2012 at Cordova Bay Golf Course in Victoria, B.C. It was at this championship tournament where alumni, David Lang, finished in 24th overall in a field of 105 golfers.

Representing the Lords this year at nationals will be Colin Jex (Port Hope, Ont.), Josh Taylor (Barrie, Ont.), Lucas Pichl (Cobourg, Ont.), Mac Harrison (Brooklin, Ont.), and Ryan Trapp (Janetville, Ont.). The team is coming off a bronze medal finish at the OCAA championship back in October, before hosting the 2017 PING CCAA golf national championships at Royal Ashburn Golf Club.

Taylor was able to crack the top 20 at the CCAA championship. At provincials, Taylor also had the best finish for Durham, shooting 20-over to finish tied for fifth. In his first season with the Lords he was only six strokes back of the podium. He also had the best final round, coming in with a seven-over 79.

Trapp also had a great year, capturing gold at the inaugural Ridgeback Invitational. Trapp was the top individual golfer at the tournament, shooting a two-over 74, ending his round with a birdie to beat out three players by one stroke. The team also went home with some hardware at the invitational, winning bronze.

The Canadian University/College Championship will be a four-round championship. After the third round the field will be cut to the low 10 male teams and the low six female teams. Teams and individuals within 15 shots of the lead will also make the cut. The event will also consist of four contests: men's team, women's team, men's individual and women's individual.
