KINGSTON, Ont. - The St. Lawrence College men's basketball team played their last home regular season basketball game on Sunday against the slumping 0-17 Fleming College Knights.
SLC made quick work as it would build a solid lead quickly, and never gave it back to the Knights. The Vikings were able to find open players throughout the game for open three-point shots, and for quick jump shots from the field.
The hot shooting by SLC stayed consistent for all 40 minutes, with the team shooting 55 per cent from the field, and 42 per cent from the three-point line. The consistent shooting earned the Vikings a 93-55 victory, moving the team to a 9-9 record, and more importantly, keeping up with the tight Ontario Colleges Athletics Association (OCAA) East Division standings.
"It was a great effort this afternoon from all of our players, as were able to get an even rotation through our roster," said SLC head coach Barry Smith.
Before the game, graduating players Terence Thomas and Dylan George were honoured for their hard work and dedication during their time at SLC. Barry admitted that he is sad to see both leave.
"Terence has been huge for us and we will miss him dearly. He's grown into a great quiet leader for this group. And Dylan is just starting to show his true potential in his second year. It's really too bad that we aren't going to have him next year, as he has really developed this season."
After the season, Terence will be graduating from the child and youth worker program, and will have used his last year of OCAA eligibility. Dylan will be graduating from the police foundations program.
"I've had an unbelievable experience here at SLC," said Vikings captain Thomas. "I played with some great teammates through all five years. As well, Barry has been a great coach for me. Sure there are some times he comes on strong, but there is another side to him that is very supportive and helpful on and off the court."
Dylan shared the same feelings towards leaving the Vikings at the end of the season. "It's been a great time here for sure. I will definitely miss being in the team environment, and going on road trips with the guys," said Dylan.
For the second consecutive game, the Vikings had multiple players finish in double digits in points. Andrew Dawkins and Connor Paulain finished with a team-high 19 points. Donald Gibson added 14 points, and Jason Aransevia played a great 16 minutes of basketball, finishing with 11 points.
The Vikings will play their final two regular season games on the road, starting Friday, Feb. 14 against Durham College.
