TORONTO - In an effort to better balance the number of teams per division in women's basketball, the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) has announced changes for the upcoming 2019-20 season.
The University of Toronto Mississauga men's and women's basketball teams will move into the East Division after spending its first two seasons in the West. The Canadore Panthers men's team will return to the West Division after six seasons in the East.
These moves allow for nine teams in the East Division and 10 in the West for women's basketball, while not effecting the equal balance of 11 teams in both divisions of men's basketball. Previously there were 11 women's teams in the West Division, and eight in the East.
Teams will play a double round robin format within their divisions playing once at home and once away. The only exception is Sault which either hosts consecutive games or travels for consecutive games against the same opponent for the majority of its regular season schedule due to travel distances. There is no interdivisional play during the regular season.
Championship hosts Lambton (men) and St. Clair (women) still earn an automatic berth to the quarter-finals. The top seven remaining teams in each division will play opponents from the opposite division in an interdivisional sudden death playoff to determine the remaining berths at the respective championships. These are seeded according to team positions in the final standings.
The regular season schedules for men's and women's basketball will be announced before the end of the month.
