Four teams are left standing after this past weekend’s
quarterfinal games that took place across the Province. Algonquin,
Fanshawe, George Brown and Seneca are set to compete at the OCAA
Men’s Soccer Championship, hosted by Algonquin College from
October 26-27, 2007.
QUALIFYING RESULTS
Seneca defeated Sheridan 2-1
At the beginning of the week, the Seneca Sting did not even know if
they would they would be a part of the post-season but after a win
over the Centennial Colts in their regular season finale and a
Fleming loss, the Sting were set to travel to Oakville to face the
Sheridan Bruins (West Region regular season champions). Behind
goals from Marcus Reiner and Rickey Harris, the Sting upset the
Bruins 2-1, sending the hometown crowd home disappointed. Pedro
Figuroa recorded the lone goal for Sheridan. The Bruins headed into
their match against Seneca on a hot streak winning their past six
matches. Seneca will now play George Brown on Friday at 5:00pm.
George Brown defeated Mohawk 2-0
The George Brown Huskies shutout the Mohawk Mountaineers 2-0 to
advance to their second consecutive OCAA Championship. The Huskies
got out to a quick start scoring the opening goal in the third
minute on a low drive that hit the back of the net. George Brown
was the dominant team in the opening half as the Mountaineers had
trouble adjusting to the artificial turf. Chris Tournidis, the
Mohawk goalkeeper, made some outstanding saves in the first half to
keep his team in the contest, especially in the 18th minute when he
had to make a full stretch diving stop. The second half featured
chances by both sides, but both keepers game up with big saves. In
the 86th minute, George Brown netted their second goal of the game,
securing their birth in the Championship. Huskies goalkeeper Colin
Mercier recorded the clean sheet, while Noel Ellerton and Camilo
Moreno record the goals. The Huskies will match up against the
Seneca Sting. The two teams played to a 1-1 draw early in the
regular season.

Algonquin defeated Humber 5-0
The Algonquin Thunder will look to win their fourth consecutive
OCAA Championship on home turf this weekend as they advanced to the
OCAA Championship with a convincing 5-0 qualifying win over Humber
on the weekend. The Thunder did not let their regular season finale
loss to George Brown slow them down, as they came out firing and
blanking the Hawks. Will Beauge and Michael Tjarera netted a pair
of goals apiece for the Thunder, while Tyler Farrell-Rose scored
the other. The two teams got chippy midway through game with six
cautions and three red cards being handed out by the official. The
Thunder will play the Fanshawe Falcons under the lights in the
semi-finals at 8:00 pm.
Fanshawe defeated Durham 1-0
In a game that saw the Fanshawe Falcons and Durham Lords trade
quality scoring chances for 90 minutes, the Falcons managed to
narrowly defeat the Lords 1-0 to advance to the OCAA Championship.
Shawn Mendes of the Falcons stood on his head recording the clean
sheet. Fabrice Kabongo’s (Durham’s keeper) only blemish
was a first half goal by Greg Remijn. Remijn has been on a tear in
2007 finishing second in scoring averaging 1.38 goals per game.
This will mark the first time Fanshawe has qualified for the OCAA
Championship since 2004. They will look to upset the host college
Algonquin Thunder in their semi final match-up at 8:00 pm.
