Peterborough, ON – In an intense final match of the OCAA Men's Soccer Championships, the Durham Lords struck gold with a score of 2-1 over the silver medal recipients, the Algonquin Thunder.
Going into the Gold Medal match for the first time since 2009 were two East division teams, the Algonquin Thunder who were ranked 1st in the East with a record of 7-2-1, and the Durham Lords who were ranked 2nd in the East with a record of 6-3-1. Each of which had one win and one loss over the other in regular season play.
In the final match Durham came out strong from the start scoring the first goal of the game within the first 10 minutes. Lords' #12 Jeremy Bangala (Pickering) scored with a header assisted by #16 Colin Reilly (Whitby) on the Algonquin goalie #1 Colin Gibson (Ottawa).
The Lords maintained the lead throughout the first half and into the second when Thunder's #20 Justin Gibson (Ottawa) tied the score at 1-1. Both teams traded scoring chances throughout the rest of the game. The Durham Lords finally capitalized on one of their chances as #15 Kevin Thibodeau (Pickering) slipped past the Thunder's defense and put the ball behind the Thunder's goalie Colin Gibson to steal the lead with only moments left in the match.
The Algonquin Thunder and Durham Lords will move on to compete against Canada's top soccer teams in the CCAA Men's Soccer Championships in Nanaimo, BC, Nov 8-11.
