CCAA Gold Medal Match: Durham Lords 3, VIU Mariners 2
The Durham Lords won their first-ever CCAA championship gold medal after a five-goal thriller saw them defeat the No. 3 nationally ranked VIU Mariners.
It was a nervy start from both sides but the first chance of the game fell to VIU's Cole Senchar who sent a header just wide of the Lords' net. Joshua Lee then opened the scoring in the 17th minute when he found some space in the box and smashed home his effort, beating Mariners keeper Kevin Picard at his near post. Moments later Ryan Cullen made it 2-0 from close range sending the home crowd into pandemonium.
Following the break, Senchar netted one for the 2017 champions after the ball dropped to him in the box and he tapped home the finish. Durham quickly restored a two-goal lead in the 65th minute when Jose Flores scored his second goal of the tournament, sending a free kick from a difficult angle into the opponent's net. The Mariners got their second goal in the 81st minute when Michael Heppelle scored during another scramble in front of the Durham net building the anxiety for all those in attendance. However, the Lords stood firm at the back as they clinched the national championship with the 3-2 win.
LeRohne Young was named the 4imprint Player of the Game award for Durham, while Heppelle received the award for VIU.
CCAA 5/6 Placement Match: Humber Hawks 5, Red Deer Kings 0
The Humber Hawks picked up a 5-0 win over the Red Deer Kings to claim fifth place in this year's CCAA championship
Last year's champions opened the scoring in the 27th minute when Zachary Zitoli got the ball at the top of the box and placed his shot into the bottom left corner. Zitoli got his second of the game in the 55th minute when he was unmarked at the back post and headed home.
His third goal followed not even a minute later as Humber were cruising with 35 minutes to go. Zitoli was on fire and notched his fourth goal of the game in 61st minute with his second header. Zitoli calmly wrapped things up when he slotted home his fifth in the 66th minute to cap the game.
The 4imprint Player of the Game for Humber went to Zitoli, while Matthew Elphick won the award for Red Deer.
CCAA Bronze Semi-Final: Douglas Royals 2, Humber Hawks 1 (PK)
The Douglas Royals are heading to the bronze medal game after a penalty shootout win against the 2018 CCAA Men's Soccer National Champion Humber Hawks.
Douglas got off to a strong start but their efforts were turned away by Humber goalkeeper Nick Frenati. The Royals eventually broke through when Burhan Waisy rose up to head home a cross and make it 1-0.
Humber got the equalizer with just three minutes left in the half when an unmarked Aziah Reid put a left-foot strike into the bottom right corner.
Humber almost pulled ahead with 10 minutes to go when All-Canadian Leaford Allen came off the bench and hit the post. Last year's champions pushed hard for a winner but the game went to penalties – Humber's third shootout of the tournament.
With both teams staring victory in the eyes, Douglas goalkeeper Felipe Domingos emerged as the hero making two huge saves in the shootout to lift his side into the bronze medal game.
Domingos was named the 4imprint Player of the Game for the Royals, while Michael Fayehun was recognized for the Hawks.
CCAA Semi-Final: Durham Lords 2, Red Deer Kings 0
The host Durham Lords punched their ticket to the CCAA championship final after a convincing 2-0 win against the Red Deer Kings.
Durham's Joshua Lee nearly opened the scoring following a run up the middle of the field, but his effort rung off the post. Durham continued to press and opened the scoring when Jose Flores saw his free kick slip through Red Deer's goalkeeper Jacob Hamilton's hands to take a 1-0 lead into the break.
Shortly into the second half, the Lords got their insurance goal when Lee secured the ball at the top of the box before curling a shot into the top right corner. The host Lords then stood firm on backline as Red Deer looked to find their way back into the match. Durham prevailed with the 2-0 win.
Tyreik Bryan was selected as the 4imprint Player of the Game for Durham, while Turner Johnson received the award for Red Deer.
CCAA Semi-Final: VIU Mariners 2, Humber Hawks 1 (PK)
The VIU Mariners are back in the national championship final after a penalty shootout win against the Humber Hawks following a 1-1 tie after 90 minutes.
The Hawks took a 1-0 lead as Julian Desousa got an early goal to open the first semi-final of the day. Desousa was close to getting his second of the game just before the half but his effort was parried away by Kevin Pickard. Heading into the break Humber held a slender 1-0 advantage.
VIU tied the game up in the 65th minute when Cole Senchar rose up to head home a cross from the corner.
VIU went on to win in penalties to secure a berth into the CCAA championship gold medal game for the second time in three years after winning the national tournament in 2017.
Shun Takano won the 4imprint Player of the Game award for VIU, with Nicholas Machado picking up the honour for Humber.
CCAA Quarter-Final: Durham Lords 3, Douglas Royals 1
The Host Durham Lords advanced the CCAA Men's Soccer Championship semi-final with a 3-1 win over the Douglas Royals.
Hosting the tournament for the first time since 1999, the Lords started strong with lots of pressure on the Royals. However it was Douglas opening the scoring in the 37th minute when a corner ball dropped to Quinn Desaulniers who calmly slotted the ball past Lords keeper Kevon Grant.
The start of the second half is when the goals started flowing for Durham. Nick Spittle got on the end of LeRohne Young's cross and found the bottom right corner to level the game. Just a minute later Young got a goal of his own when he stayed onside at the back post to make it 2-1 in the 51st minute. Shortly after, substitute Eric Savvas initiated a counter attack down the right wing to Spittle, who crossed the ball to Paul at the back post who placed the ball into the bottom right corner to make it 3-1 for Durham.
Spittle was awarded the 4imprint Player of the Game for Durham, while Desaulniers earned the award for Douglas.
CCAA Quarter-Final: Humber Hawks 4, Ch. Saint-Lambert Cavliers 3 (PK)
The CCAA defending champion Humber Hawks defeated the Champlain Cavaliers in a penalty shootout following a six-goal thriller.
The scoring started early when the Hawks Nicholas Machado made it 1-0 in the fifth minute. Seven minutes later Humber were able to get a second goal courtesy of Max Ferrari. The Cavaliers made it 2-1 in the 29th minute from a corner which took a slight deflection off a Humber player on its way in. Champlain evened things up following a scramble in front of the net which saw Junior Camara get on the end of it to make it 2-2.
Humber regained the lead in the 56th minute when Uday Arora found some space at the top of the box and placing a low shot in the bottom left corner. However, Champlain fought back once again in the 60th minute when Alex Torchon got on the end of a cross and his shot was too strong for the Hawks goalie to keep out.
The Cavaliers nearly pulled off the upset, but Humber keeper Nick Frenati made two crucial saves in penalty kicks, allowing Humber to claim a 3-1 shoutout win.
Frenati won 4imprint Player of the Game for the Hawks, while Hugo Dufresne picked up the award for Champlain.
