CCAA Championship Match: Humber Hawks 1, Douglas Royals 0
One goal is all it took for the Humber College Hawks to win their eighth CCAA men's soccer title.
Exosse Kadiebue scored in the 10th minute of the game, as his Hawks defeated the Douglas College Royals 1-0 in their CCAA Men's Soccer National Championship gold medal match played Saturday evening at SAIT's Cohos Commons Field.
Douglas, who were looking for their first national title since 2005, earned the silver medal for the third time in program history - also doing so in 2017 and 2002.
The rest of the game saw Douglas struggle to find opportunities to score, as attempt after attempt were shut down by the Hawks' back line.
Humber had a chance to double their lead in the second half, but Douglas keeper Jacob McCall stood tall and kept the ball out of the net to keep his team in the game.
Following that, Humber slowed things down and did just enough to keep the Royals at bay until the final whistle.
Humber's Marcos Nunes and Douglas College's Mohamednur Ibrahim were named Players of the Game.
CCAA Bronze Semi-Final: Nomades de Montmorency 2, George Brown Huskies 1
Yassine Taitah put his team on his back, and now they will play for a CCAA Men's Soccer National Championship bronze medal.
Taitah scored both of his team's goals - the first a beautiful bicycle kick in the 15th minute - as his Montmorency College Nomades defeated the George Brown College Huskies 2-1 Friday afternoon at SAIT's Cohos Commons Field.
The win sends the Nomades to Saturday's bronze medal game, which will be played at 12:30pm MST on Saturday afternoon.
Montmorency controlled much of the play in the opening half, but George Brown made things interesting after the break.
Much like Thursday's last-minute heroics which earned them a win over the SAIT Trojans in penalty kicks, the Huskies scored a goal in the 78th minute off the foot of Mark-Luis De Coito to make things interesting on Friday.
Players of the Game were Christopher Badibenji for the Huskies and, obviously, Taitah for the Nomades.
CCAA Semi-Final: Humber Hawks 1, Nomades de Montmorency 1 *(Humber wins PKs 4-3)
In what, arguably, has been the best game of the tournament so far, the Humber College Hawks came out on top.
An eventful first half saw both teams apply pressure, but neither club could draw first blood.
The Hawks didn't wait long to break the scoreless tie, getting a goal from Abdul Babawale to go up 1-0 just seconds into the second half.
Like the first half, the remainder of the game saw both teams trade chances. In the 74th minute, Montmorency College were finally rewarded for their hard work when Ansoumane Camara scored on a penalty kick after teammate Alexandre Marcoux was taken down in the box.
When nothing was decided after the final whistle, the teams went to penalty kicks.
After each team scored on their first three attempts, they each missed on the fourth. Humber scored on their fifth attempt, setting the stage for excitement either way.
Montmorency's Alexandre Marcoux, who scored twice in Wednesday's quarter-final win over NAIT, faced off against Humber goalkeeper Holger Xhameta.
Marcoux fired his shot to the lower right-hand side of the net, and Xhameta guessed right, stopping the attempt to send his team to the gold medal game on Saturday at 3pm MST against the Douglas College Royals.
Montmorency will now move on to the bronze semifinal match on Friday at 12:30pm MST where they will meet the George Brown College Huskies.
Humber's Michael Fayehun and Montmorency's Montacer El-Harchali were named Players of the Game for their respective teams.
CCAA Bronze Quarter-Final: George Brown Huskies 1, SAIT Trojans 1 *(George Brown wins PKs 4-3)
Last minute heroics did the trick for George Brown College on Thursday afternoon.
The Huskies received a goal from Mashhood Rehman in extra time to tie the game, before winning it 4-3 in penalty kicks over the host SAIT Trojans in their CCAA Men's Soccer National Championship bronze medal quarter-final game.
The game was controlled early on by the Trojans, who were looking to rebound after being shutout by St. Thomas 4-0 on Wednesday.
SAIT's pressure paid off in the 34th minute when Santiago Reinosa was hauled down in the box, resulting in a penalty kick.
Matteo Zanin took the ensuing penalty kick and made good, beating Huskies goalkeeper Aubrey Lowe to take a 1-0 lead.
The game turned physical after the break, with numerous yellow cards issued to players for both teams. SAIT defender Bradley Atherton received a pair of yellow cards - his second coming with 15 minutes left in the second half to force SAIT to play the remainder of the contest with just 10 men.
George Brown pounced on the short-handed Trojans and created scoring opportunities for themselves.
Their last opportunity was the one they capitalized on, as Rehman was given just enough space to let go a shot that beat SAIT keeper Ben Press in the lower right-hand side of the net.
After the final whistle, the teams went straight to penalty kicks where Lowe shined - stopping both Zanin and Reinosa. Yonis Jama then beat Press for what turned out to be the winner.
George Brown will move forward in their quest for bronze, while the host Trojans see their tournament come to an end after going 0-2.
Lowe and Reinosa were named the Players of the Game for their respective games.
CCAA Quarter-Final: Humber Hawks 1, Brandon Bobcats 0
In a game tighter than most would have imagined, the Humber College Hawks narrowly defeated the Brandon University Bobcats 1-0.
The Hawks, winners of five CCAA titles since 2012, seemed to start slow but found their footing about 15 minutes in with some offensive pressure. To their credit, the Bobcats defended their half of the field well and were able to keep the ball out of their net.
Humber scored what turned out to be the game-winner when Luca Uccello beat the Bobcats' keeper Ryder Anthony in the 19th minute.
Brandon applied a bit of pressure in the second half, but could not find the equalizer.
Humber now moves on to the event's semifinals Thursday at 3pm MST where they will meet Montmorency College. Brandon falls to the consolation side and will take on the NAIT Ooks at 10am MST.
The Players of the Game were Osman Hussein for the Hawks and Nathan Chubaty for the Bobcats.
CCAA Quarter-Final: Douglas Royals 3, George Brown Huskies 0
In Wednesday's night game, the Douglas College Royals did all the work they needed in the second half to advance to the CCAA Men's Soccer National Championship semifinal.
The Royals scored all three of their goals after the break, as they blanked George Brown College 3-0 in their quarter-final game.
After a scoreless first half, Douglas finally got on the board when Mohamednur Ibrahim scored in the 55th minute.
Nearly 20 minutes later, the Royals doubled their lead when Rozmehr Aghabaygy beat the Huskies keeper.
Duncan Bates added Douglas College's third marker of the night in the 85th minute to close out the scoring.
The Royals will now meet the St. Thomas Tommies in Thursday's 5:30pm MST semifinal, while the Huskies will meet SAIT at 12:30pm MST.
Yonis Jama was named Player of the Game for the Huskies, while Ryosuke Sudo got the nod for Douglas College.
