PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - The Georgian Grizzlies men's and women's volleyball teams travelled to face the Fleming Knights on Saturday to open the second half of their OCAA regular seasons in Peterborough, Ont.
The men's team found itself in some unfamiliar territory.
A gritty effort by the Knights pushed the Grizzlies to the limit and in a tight finish it was Fleming who pulled out a 3-2, five set victory. The Knights won with set scores of 25-23, 22-25, 21-25, 25-20 and 15-13.
It was the first regular season loss for the Grizzlies in the last two seasons, a win streak that lasted 27 games. Georgian's last regular season defeat came on Feb. 17, 2016.
Jake Edwards (Barrie) led the Grizzlies with 18 kills along with one block while teammate Darien Haynes (Barrie) had 13 points (10 kills, three blocks). Liam Gray (Barrie) had 55 assists along with 10 digs in the loss.
Georgian falls to 9-1 on the season but they remain in first place in the OCAA East Division standings, one win up on the George Brown Huskies who are 8-2.
On the women's side, the Grizzlies continued their hot streak.
Despite playing with a shortened bench, Georgian put together an impressive game, sweeping the Knights in three straight sets 3-0 (25-17, 28-26, 25-22).
Camryn Morgan (Barrie) continues to be a scoring threat as she led the Grizzlies with 14 point effort from 10 kills and four aces. Veteran Kathryn Marks (Innisfil) was also solid with eight kills, three blocks and an ace.
Georgian has now won six straight games and eight of their last nine, as they sit with a 7-3 record on the season. The Grizzlies currently sit in sole possession of third place in the OCAA East Division standings.
Both the men's and women's teams will play their first home games of 2018 when they host the Seneca Sting this coming Friday, Feb. 19 at the Georgian Athletic Centre. The women's game is set for 6 p.m. with the men following at approximately 8 p.m. Tickets for the double header are available for $5 at the door.
