ALGONQUIN WINS WOMEN'S RUGBY SEVENS CHAMPIONSHIP

BELLEVILLE, Ont. - The Algonquin Thunder are the OCAA women's rugby sevens champions. The Thunder defeated the Durham Lords on Saturday afternoon at Loyalist College in Belleville, Ont., to claim the 2019 title.

The Thunder held a commanding lead through the first half and expanded to go up 19-7 with only three minutes left in the game. With both teams putting everything they had on the field, Algonquin played out the remaining minutes of the game down a player due to a red card ejection. The Lords took advantage with a breakaway try that closed the game to 19-14 before the Thunder secured the game with a try in the final seconds to bring the game to a 24-14 final.

The Lords earned their way into the finals with a 19-14 win over the Seneca Sting in their semifinal match earlier in the day. The Thunder worked their way to the final after a 25-5 quarter-final win over the Conestoga Condors and a 24-10 upset over the West Division's first-place team, Humber Hawks in the semis.

Algonquin Thunder's Saige Pedis and Jodie McKirdy were named OCAA Championship All-Stars while teammate Leah Pedis was named Championship MVP.

Kaylah Moehling and Jadika Lynch of the Durham Lords were named OCAA Championship All-Stars for their incredible performances throughout the day.

The Seneca Sting are the OCAA women's rugby sevens bronze medalists after defeating the Humber Hawks. Bouncing back from a hard fought semifinal loss against the Lords, the Sting looked comfortable against their division rivals and took and early 5-0 lead to start the game. The Hawks made a late game push but the Sting held their ground and cruised to a 32-12 victory.

Cheyenne De Luca from Humber was named a Championship All-Star, joined by Seneca's Mackenzie Fane.
