JOHNSON NAMED OCAA WOMEN'S SOCCER PLAYER OF THE YEAR

JOHNSON NAMED OCAA WOMEN'S SOCCER PLAYER OF THE YEAR

OTTAWA - Cambrian College's Tiffany Johnson (Sudbury, Ont.) is the 2014 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) women's soccer player of the year. She received the award in a ceremony held in Ottawa on Thursday evening.

The third-year forward is the first Cambrian player to win either a league or regional scoring championship, netting 16 goals in eight matches. It is the highest offensive output by a single player since Katie Watts of Durham scored 18 goals in 2009. Johnson scored at least two goals in each of Cambrian's six regular season victories.

Along with her player of the year award, Johnson is also an OCAA all-star and a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) all-Canadian.

Amy Savage (Ottawa) of Algonquin College is also a CCAA all-Canadian. The fifth-year midfielder scored five goals for the Thunder en route to an east regional championship. Savage played nearly every minute of every match, and embraced her role as a veteran leader guiding Algonquin's rookies through their first collegiate seasons. Savage is also an OCAA all-star.

The CCAA coach of the year nominee from Ontario is Steve Vagnini of St. Clair College. Vagnini turned the Saints into a championship contender in his first season at the helm, as St. Clair improved from 1-6-1 in 2013 to 4-2-2 this season. As a result, St. Clair hosted its first playoff game in 15 years. Vagnini is the OCAA west coach of the year.

The OCAA east and overall rookie of the year is Emma Arsenault (Ottawa). The defender was a member of an Algonquin squad that earned best defensive team honours for not allowing a goal in eight regular season matches.

Giuseppe Politi of Cambrian is the east coach of the year. The Golden Shield finished the regular season 6-2-0 and hosted their first playoff game in school history. The team scored 41 goals during the regular season, seven more than their nearest adversary.

The OCAA west rookie of the year is St. Clair forward Melanie Daniel (Tecumseh, Ont.). Daniel scored five times to lead the Saints.

Seneca College's Angela DeCarli and Rachel Dorland were named the top defensive player and goalkeeper in the east region, respectively. DeCarli (Richmond Hill, Ont.), a fourth-year defender, and Dorland (Richmond Hill, Ont.), a second-year keeper, were key reasons why Seneca allowed just one goal in eight regular season matches.

Alora Walcott (Toronto) of Humber College is the west defensive player of the year. The third-year defender was the cornerstone of a team that allowed just three goals in eight matches. Humber is the west's regional champions and best defensive team. Walcott is also an OCAA all-star.

Katie Parker of Fanshawe College and Sheridan College's Michaela Krampert are the co-scoring champions in the west region. Parker (Strathroy, Ont.), a fifth-year forward, and Krampert (Mississauga, Ont.), a first-year midfielder, both scored 11 goals in eight matches. Both players were also named OCAA all-stars.

Sheridan's Mallory Woeller (Brampton, Ont.) was named the west goalkeeper of the year. The fifth-year player was the last line of defence as Sheridan went undefeated in the regular season, allowing just seven goals.

Each OCAA team nominates two all-stars. The OCAA all-stars from the east region include third-year defender Melissa Harrison (Burlington, Ont.) and Savage of Algonquin; Johnson and fifth-year defender Ashley Melnek (Sudbury, Ont.) of Cambrian; fourth-year goalkeeper Monica Morgan (Duncan, B.C.) and first-year forward Alexis Sutton (Ajax, Ont.) of Centennial College; second-year player Riley Graham (Oshawa, Ont.) and first-year player Kayla Hellam (Oshawa, Ont.) of Durham College; first-year goalkeeper Ashlie Drake (Alliston, Ont.) and first-year midfielder Rebecka Schultz (Selwyn, Ont.) of Fleming College; third-year defender Rana Abdel Aziz (Toronto) and fifth-year midfielder Kayla Crnic (Mississauga, Ont.) of George Brown College; third-year player Megan Macleod (Consecon, Ont.) and third-year defender Stephanie Semark (Belleville, Ont.) of Loyalist College; fourth-year forward Megan Hutcheson (Kingston, Ont.) and third-year midfielder Jessie Pennock (Sydenham, Ont.) of St. Lawrence College; as well as third-year forward Mariam El-Masri (Scarborough, Ont.) and third-year midfielder Emma Gattoni (Thornhill, Ont.) of Seneca.

The OCAA west all-stars include second-year forward Jennifer Farquhar (Waterloo, Ont.) and first-year forward Megan Longpre (Kitchener, Ont.) of Conestoga College; second-year defender Chelsea Brintnell (Exeter, Ont.) and Parker of Fanshawe; fifth-year player Tara Dawdy (Burlington, Ont.) and Walcott of Humber; third-year forward Sarah Harding (Sarnia, Ont.) and second-year midfielder Chelsea Wagner (Sarnia, Ont.) of Lambton College; first-year midfielder Michele DiDionisio (Hamilton, Ont.) and first-year striker Ellen Meyer (Kitchener, Ont.) of Mohawk College; third-year midfielder Nicole Forbes (Ajax, Ont.) and third-year player Jackie Lawther (Grimsby, Ont.) of Niagara College; third-year midfielder Monica Loewen (Aylmer, Ont.) and second-year midfielder Meaghan Rudd (Cambridge, Ont.) of Redeemer University College; fifth-year midfielder Stefanie Dummer (Windsor, Ont.) and third-year midfielder Robyn Preston (Tecumseh, Ont.) of St. Clair; and Krampert and second-year striker Myjnairii Perkins (Brampton, Ont.) of Sheridan.
