ALGONQUIN 6, MOHAWK 0

SUDBURY, Ont. - The powerful Algonquin Thunder of Ottawa whipped the Mohawk Mountaineers 6-0 at the belairdirect OCAA Women's Soccer Championship in Sudbury, Ont., on Thursday, Oct. 26.

The two-time defending champions got off to a great start in their bid to win their fourth gold medal in five years.

Melissa Gilligan and Mallory McQueen fired two goals apiece for the Thunder, who were 12-0 in the regular season, outscoring their opponents 62-2.

Mohawk co-head coach Michael Castellani said Algonquin is a very good, disciplined team. "They certainly earned a perfect record," said Castellani. "We played well up to the 25th minute, but we just couldn't hold them. The back line played well."

The Thunder had most of the possession during the game and outshot the Mountaineers 16-3. Mohawk goalkeeper Laura Blackburn did all she could stem the tide. The same could be said for defender Alyssa O'Brien, who was clearly the Mountaineers Player of the Game.

The best Mohawk can do now, is fifth place. They will play Friday at 12 p.m. against the championship host Cambrian Golden Shield, who lost 2-1 to the Seneca Sting.
