FANSHAWE REPEATS AS OCAA WOMEN'S SOCCER CHAMPIONS

ANCASTER, Ont. - The Fanshawe Falcons are back-to-back OCAA women's soccer champions. The Falcons defeated the Seneca Sting on Saturday afternoon at Redeemer University College in Ancaster, Ont., to claim their second consecutive crown.

The Falcons scored early in the first half and it proved to be all they needed as they went on to defeat the Sting 2-0 in the championship final.

Nicole Neilsen opened the scoring in the seventh minute while Jade Kovacevic added the insurance in the 39th.

The Sting advanced to the championship final after defeating the Humber Hawks 2-1 in their OCAA semifinal match on Friday. Fanshawe booked their ticket to Saturday's main event with a 5-1 victory over the Sheridan Bruins also on Friday in their semifinal match.

Both teams advanced to the CCAA national championship in Edmonton, Alta., by making it to the OCAA final.

Korina Lyte and Sona Makulova of Seneca were named OCAA Championship All-Stars for their strong tournament play while Jordan Burke was the Player of the Game in the final.

For the Falcons, goalkeeper Breanne Carreiro was named an OCAA Championship All-Star, along with Angelika Mihalopulos.

The leading scorer of the championship and reigning OCAA Player of the Year, Kovacevic, took home the Championship MVP award. Kovacevic scored an incredible seven goals in the three tournament games.

The Humber Hawks are the 2019 OCAA bronze medalists. The Hawks were able to rebound from a disappointing loss on Friday to the Seneca Sting at the 2019 OCAA Women's Soccer Championship.

Saturday morning, in the OCAA bronze medal match, the Hawks were in fine form, defeating the Sheridan Bruins 2-0.

Humber used a first-half goal by Emma Stushnoff to propel the Hawks to the OCAA medal. Giulia Zanardi iced the game midway through the second half, with a long strike from outside the 18 to give the Hawks the 2-0 lead.

The Sheridan Bruins had another great championship but fell just short of an OCAA medal. The Bruins advanced to the championship bronze medal match after defeating the Algonquin Thunder in Wednesday's quarter-final and then losing to the Fanshawe Falcons on Friday in the semis.

The Hawks defeated the Durham Lords in the OCAA quarter-final on Wednesday before falling to the Seneca Sting on Friday in the championship semi.

Emma Stushnoff was named a Championship All-Star for the Hawks for her strong tournament play.
