FANSHAWE WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS SHORT OF BID FOR NATIONAL BRONZE

CCAA Bronze Medal Game: Champlain Saint-Lambert Cavaliers 1, Fanshawe Falcons 0

The Champlain Saint-Lambert Cavaliers defeated the Fanshawe Falcons 1-0 in the bronze medal game earlier in the day. 

The matchup featured the RSEQ and OCAA champions under snowy and frigid conditions. 

Karina Fortier opened the scoring for the Cavaliers with a well-placed shot the box in the 7th minute. At halftime, Concordia University of Edmonton volunteers did an outstanding job to remove snow from the field and ensure the best possible playing conditions for the players. 

Champlain controlled the play in the second half with the majority of possession and earned their third straight CCAA medal at nationals (bronze in 2019, gold in 2018, silver in 2017).

Players of the Game were Karina Fortier of the Cavaliers and Daniella Strano of the Falcons.

CCAA 5/6 Placement Match: Seneca Sting vs. NAIT Ooks

Saturday's placement games (5 vs. 6 and 7 vs. 8) have been cancelled due to forecasted inclement weather. A significant amount of snow and extreme cold temperatures are expected in the Edmonton area. The CCAA's priority is to ensure the bronze- and gold-medal games are played in their entirety and in the best possible conditions for our student-athletes.

CCAA Bronze Semi-Final: Fanshawe Falcons 2, Seneca Sting 0

OCAA rivals Fanshawe and Seneca met in the first bronze medal semi-final of the day. Fanshawe advanced to Saturday's bronze medal game with a 2-0 victory over rival Seneca. 

Angelika Mihalopulos gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead in the 45th minute. CCAA Player of the Year Jade Kovacevic broke through and buried a breakaway goal in the 85th minute. 

The 4imprint Players of the Game were CCAA All-Canadians Kovacevic from the Falcons and Sona Makulova from the Sting.

CCAA Semi-Final: Dynamiques de Sainte-Foy 2, Fanshawe Falcons 0

The Dynamiques de Sainte-Foy, the RSEQ wildcard entry, defeated the Fanshawe Falcons 2-0 to punch their ticket to the gold-medal game on Saturday. 

The red-hot Rosalie Dumont opened the scoring for the Dynamiques in the sixth minute. Then in the 21st minute, Laurie Champagne caught the Fanshawe goalkeeper off guard with a shot from 24 yards out. 

The Falcons pressed the attack in the second half but could not break through. Fanshawe will now shift its focus to battling for a bronze medal. 

The 4imprint Players of the Game were Amber-Lea Hodgins of the Falcons and Megane Roy of the Dynamiques.

CCAA Bronze Quarter-Final: Seneca Sting 3, Concordia Thunder 1

The Seneca Sting downed the Concordia Thunder 3-1 in the second bronze quarter-final match of the day. 

Seneca took a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute when Olivia Lamacchia found the back of the net off a cross. The Sting then took a 2-0 lead just before the half, as Julianna Cellamare was sprung loose and scored in the 45th minute. 

Concordia cut Seneca's lead in half in the 49th minute, when Breanna Callander tucked a rocket from the top of the box just under the crossbar. The Thunder continued to press late in the contest but could not find the equalizer. 

CCAA All-Canadian Sona Makulova rounded out the scoring for the Sting on a penalty kick in added time. 

The 4imprint Players of the Game were Paige Martin of the Thunder and Alessia Da Silva of the Sting.

CCAA Quarter-Final: VIU Mariners 3, Seneca Sting 2

The PACWEST champion VIU Mariners defeated the Seneca Sting 3-2 in the third quarter-final of the day. CCAA All-Canadian Chloe Gummer scored a hat trick to lead VIU.

Gummer opened the scoring for the Mariners in the 15th minute. Seneca's own CCAA All-Canadian Sona Makulova levelled the score for the Seneca Sting on a free kick in the 38th minute.

Gummer added her second of the game in the 54th minute. She then connected off a cross for her third of the contest in the 68th minute.

Faith Metcalfe-Simiana rounded out the scoring with a late marker for Seneca.

The 4imprint Players of the Game were Gummer of the Mariners and Korina Lyte of the Sting. 

CCAA Quarter-Final: Fanshawe Falcons 3, Holland Hurricanes 0

The Fanshawe Falcons defeated the Holland Hurricanes 3-0 in the opening match at the 2019 CCAA Women's Soccer National Championship. It was a frigid start to the National Championship, with chilly temperatures in Edmonton.

The OCAA champion Falcons had the majority of possession and controlled much of the game against their counterpart, the ACAA champions. 

Nicole Nielsen opened the scoring for the Falcons in the second minute. Then, Fanshawe captain Chelsea Zavitz's shot from 20 yards out found the back of the net in the 39th minute.

The Falcons took a 3-0 lead early in the second half on a Kayla McQueen marker in the 48th minute.

The 4imprint Player of the Game honours went to Fanshawe's Zavitz and Hurricanes goalkeeper Nicole McInnis.
