HUMBER SOARS AT FANSHAWE CROSS COUNTRY INVITATIONAL

LONDON, Ont. - The Humber Hawks are off to a flying start in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) cross country, winning both the women's and overall team titles at the 15th annual Fanshawe College Cross Country Invitational this past Saturday.

Vicky Siemon of Humber won the women's 5 km race in a time of 19:07, almost a full minute ahead of runner up and defending OCAA silver medalist Richelle Moore of St. Lawrence-Kingston. Defending OCAA bronze medalist Erika Houde-Pearce of George Brown finished third with a time of 20:14, fourteen seconds behind Moore. Houde-Pearce previously ran for Fanshawe.

Siemon showed dramatic improvement on her time of 20:45 on the same course last October. The course at the Fanshawe Conservation Area was host to last year's OCAA cross country championships.

Humber's women's team title was won on the strength of four runners in the Top 15, including Siemon, Becky Tindall (6th - 21:22), Jackie Siemon (11th - 22:20) and Katelyn Morgan (15th - 22:37).

In the men's 8 km race, hometown favourite Clint Smith of Fanshawe edged Sean Sweeney of George Brown by one second, winning the meet in a time of 26:44. Smith and Sweeney won the silver and bronze medal, respectively, at last year's provincials. Jamie Switzer of Fleming-Peterborough placed third with a time of 27:19.

Fanshawe won the men's team title on the strength of Smith, Daniel Bright (5th - 27:38), Josh Lumani (7th - 28:42) and Brandon Graham (12th - 29:22).

Humber's Nathaniel Green (8th - 29:11), Jesse Bruce (11th - 29:19) and Darren Mancini (14th - 29:50) help propel the Hawks to the overall team title.

The Fanshawe meet was one of two warm-up events leading into the 2011 OCAA cross country championships. Fleming College hosts its meet in Peterborough, Ont. on Oct. 15, two weeks prior to provincials hosted by St. Lawrence College in Kingston, Ont. on Oct. 29.
