After nine years in the position, Mohawk College cross country head coach Wayne Collins is stepping down.
The cross country programme at Mohawk was highly successful for
nearly 30 years, but died in the mid-1990s. Collins said the reason
for its demise was never clear to him.
"In any event I got into running very seriously around 2002 and
decided to resurrect the team," noted Collins. "I have coached the
team since 2003. During that time I have had the pleasure of
working with some very good athletes (including Canadian silver and
Ontario bronze medalists)."
Mohawk's Director of Student Engagement and Athletics, Michelle
Ball said of Collins, "Wayne has worked really closely with the
runners this year developing a cohesive team, as well as helping
individual runners reach their potential. His dedication to year
round training and running with his team will be missed."
"The College has been very supportive of me and my team over the
years," said Collins. "The staff in the Athletics Department make
this one of the best coaching jobs in town. Two assistant coaches,
my co-worker Rick Trottier and more recently Andre Simon, have been
super helpful over the years. I love the sport in a way that I
cannot describe in words and want nothing more than to see Mohawk
back were it belongs, winning races all over the place."
