No. 3 Women's Basketball Falls to No. 8 Fanshawe in Overtime

LONDON — In a matchup between the top-ranked programs in the province, No. 3 Humber women's basketball lost for the first time this season, falling to No. 8 Fanshawe Falcons (12-1, 2nd West) Saturday evening, 101-98.

Jahnae Gyles led her team on the night as she finished with a season-high 31 points on 10-of-14 (71.4 percent) shooting from the field. Gyles also added seven rebounds, three steals and two assists.

As one might have guessed heading into the game it was a fast-paced and high scoring opening half between the top two offences in the OCAA. Humber fell behind early in the first as Fanshawe made their first six attempts of the game jumping out to a 16-2 lead.

Humber found its groove to open the second quarter, using an 11-2 run of their own to tie the game at 31. Soon after the Hawks took their first lead of the game off an Ivana Twumasi three-pointer, taking the momentum into the break with a 12-point lead.

Again these two teams would battle back and forth in the second half, with Fanshawe taking control in the third outscoring Humber 22-13, as they made it just a one-possession game entering the fourth. Mikhaila Wright gave Humber fits all evening as the fifth-year guard had 19 points through just three quarters, finishing with 31 points in the game.

As was the case all night, Humber answered every Fanshawe run with one of their own, coming out strong to open the fourth. The Hawks were able to push their lead up two ten and seemed to have the momentum in the final stages. Fanshawe refused to back down though as a late run capped off by a Wright three-pointer made it a one-point game with less than two minutes to go. The two sides traded baskets before Fanshawe tied things up from the line with just under a minute left to play. With neither team able to deliver the game-winning basket the game headed for overtime.

The Hawks took the early lead to begin the extra frame but the Falcons answered right back as both teams were tied 95-95 with a minute left to play. Jessica Jordan gave the Falcons a two-point lead before and unsporting foul call allowed Fanshawe to push their lead to five, killing any hopes of a Humber comeback as they fell in overtime, 101-98.
