Women’s Softball Settle for National Silver

Kelowna, BC – The St. Clair College Women's Softball team settled for the Silver Medal Sunday afternoon in Kelowna, BC after being outlasted 5-4 in extra innings by host University of British Columbia (Okanagan) at the Canadian Collegiate Softball Association National Championship.  The Saints qualified for the Championship final with a 10-3 mercy shortened win over the University of Calgary in the morning and advanced after a tiebreaker.

In the final St. Clair took a brief 1-0 lead early but then quickly fell behind 3-1.  The Saints tied the game up 3-3 before they entered extra innings.  Both teams traded runs in the 8th inning but UBCO was able to load the bases in the 9th and pushed across the winning run to decide the outcome.

In the Saints final round robin game Sunday morning St. Clair trailed Calgary 2-0 heading to the 3rd inning but plated a run in the bottom half before posting a 6-run 4th to take control.  The Saints gave up a run in the 5th but answered with three in their half to force a mercy result.

Amy Claydon (Cambridge, ON) had another solo homerun with teammate Judy Lafleur (Essex, ON) clearing the fence with a 4th inning 2-run blast.  Shae-Lyn Murphy (Windsor, ON) had two RBI's on a pair of singles for the Saints and scored twice.  Claydon came on in relief to claim the victory throwing 3.1 innings allowing no runs on three hits and two walks with a pair of strikeouts.

St. Clair resumes their OCAA schedule on Wednesday when they host Fanshawe College (London) in a doubleheader at the campus diamond with game times set for 6:00 and 8:00pm.

The Saints will also play host to the OCAA Championship Oct. 21-23.
