PETERBOROUGH, Ont. – On Sunday morning the Durham College women's rugby sevens team made history, earning their first conference victory against the Conestoga Condors.
Earlier in the season at home, hosting the OCAA's first east tournament of the year,
Kaya Crockford-Jerome (Oshawa, Ont.) scored the programs first try in conference play, while
Taylor Lantaigne (Whitby, Ont.) had the team's first convert.
With their 19-12 win over the Condors, it was the team's most points in a match in their inaugural season.
"We worked very hard for the win today over Conestoga, controlling most of the game, but mental errors and handling errors had us behind late," said head coach
Chris McKee. "We dug deep and scored on the last play of the game. We are happy with the win, but need to limit our mental errors to compete with the middle of the pack teams. We feel we should have beat Sheridan yesterday, but those mental errors let us down. Our goal for next week is to bring our game up to the level it should be at to compete with third and fourth place teams in our division. The coaching staff's job this week is to get the girls ready for next Saturday."
Victoria Browne (Pickering, Ont.) scored two tries in the victory, while Jamiia Fari (Oshawa, Ont.) scored once. Lantaigne kicked two converts for the Lords – a match high for her.
To end the weekend the Lords fell 45-5 to the defending OCAA silver medalists and inaugural rugby sevens champion Humber Hawks. Lantaigne scored the lone try in the loss.
Next Saturday they travel to Belleville for their second east tournament of the season. They will play four matches during the day, starting with the St. Lawrence Vikings at 10:30 a.m.
