Durham defeat Mohawk in home finale

OSHAWA, Ont. - The Durham College women's softball team knocked off the Mohawk Mountaineers in a Tuesday night doubleheader at Durham Field for their home and regular season finale.

Prior to the start of the game the Lords honoured their graduating athletes: Lisa Daugherty (Georgetown, Ont.), Julia Mantler (Drayton, Ont.), Kaleigh MacIntyre (Guelph, Ont.), Alexis Pereira (Newmarket, Ont.), Emily Glendinning (Plattsville, Ont.), Jaimie Clarke (Oshawa, Ont.), Alanna Stanoev (Whitby, Ont.), Caleigh Coels (Duncan, B.C.), and Ashley Black (Waterloo, Ont.). The Lords won the season series 4-0 over the Mountaineers after picking up 8-2 and 7-0 wins on Tuesday evening. The Lords will finish no less than second place in the OCAA, currently sitting in first with a 19-5 record. Only the Humber Hawks have an opportunity to surpass DC as they have two games in hand with a record of 18-4.

Before heading to the OCAA championship, hosted from Oct. 18-19 at Fanshawe College, Durham will first make their return to the CCSA national championship this weekend in Kitchener. Last year the Lords captured the national silver, but will be in tough with opening round-robin games against contenders Western, Saskatchewan, and Calgary. Action begins Friday, Oct. 11 versus Saskatchewan at 10 a.m.
  GAME 1
• Displaying an incredible ability to hit for extra-bases, MacIntyre went 2-for-3, recording a triple and a home run to knock in five RBI and cross the plate twice herself.
• Both Pereira and Nicole Mancini (Toronto, Ont.) also went 2-for-3 in the opener, both crossing the plate for runs in the win.
GAME 2
• Following a heartfelt ceremony which saw her grandmother deliver the ceremonial first pitch, Black was exceptional in Game 2 for the Lords going 2-for-3 at the plate, including a two RBI triple in DC's five run fourth inning.
  GAME 1
Andrea Patrick (Whitby, Ont.) earned the win for the Lords going five innings with two unearned runs allowed, while striking out three.
• First-year standout Sydney Redick (Alvinston, Ont.) appeared in relief for Durham, striking out three Mohawk batters over two innings of shutout ball.
• Kayla Mitchell pitched all six innings for the Mountaineers, picking up the loss after allowing six earned runs on 11 Lords hits, including the MacIntyre home run.
GAME 2
• Black also stepped into the pitching circle in the Lords finale, shutting out the Mountaineers over five innings, giving up just five hits and striking out three. She finishes her career with a program-high 41 OCAA regular season wins.
• Mohawk pitcher Alyssa van der Werf was the lone pitcher used, allowing seven runs over four innings.
  Overall Record: 22-7
Conference Record: 19-5

Next Game: Friday, Oct. 11 vs. Saskatchewan Huskies (10 a.m. - CCSA National Championship - Kitchener, Ont.)
