BELLEVILLE, Ont. – The No. 13 ranked Durham College men's volleyball team avoided a collapse on Thursday night with a 3-2 road victory over the Loyalist Lancers.
The Lords looked in control to open the game taking the first two sets by the same score of 25-12.
With the bus warming up in the parking lot ready to head back to Oshawa, the Lancers avoided a sweep taking the third set 26-24. They would continue to put pressure on Durham in the fourth set winning 25-23, extending the match and forcing a fifth set.
With their backs against the wall, Durham was able to fight back with a 15-11 victory in the fifth set, earning their fourth win of the season.
Bret Polfuss (Kitchener, Ont.) was unstoppable converting on 20 of his 28 total attacks that were mainly set-up by
John Pham (Mississauga, Ont.) who had a game-high 41 assists.
Andrew Watson (Uxbridge, Ont.) ended the match with 12 kills while
Erik Janssen (Hampton, Ont.) had 11.
Adam Strickland of Loyalist led all scorers with 23 kills in the loss.
Durham needed two-points on Thursday night as they came into the game off a 3-0 loss to the Georgian Grizzlies. At 4-1, Durham is tied with Georgian for top spot in the east region but the Grizzlies have a game in hand.
The Lords next action comes on Thursday, Nov. 17 against the Fleming Knights. First serve after the women's game is scheduled for 8 p.m. at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre.
Tonight's game was Durham's second of four consecutive matches on Thursdays in the month of November.
