Defence Leads No. 3 Women's Basketball Over Conestoga, 68-54

KITCHENER — No.3 Humber women's basketball picked up its first win of the second half, defeating the Conestoga Condors (6-6, 6th West) on the road Saturday afternoon, 68-54.

Kia Watt was terrific for Humber in the team's first game back from the break, as the rookie led the Hawks scoring with 15 points, while also picking up four rebounds, four assists and a steal.

Humber struggled in the opening stages of the game, falling behind the host Condors after going almost three minutes before recording their first basket. Humber picked things up in the second half of the quarter as their offence came to life. Kia Watt knocked down a three to give the Hawks their first lead of the game before Jahnae Gyles would cap off the quarter hitting a triple at the buzzer to put the Hawks up by three heading after ten minutes of play.

Both teams struggled on offence in the second quarter, combining to score just 25 points in the frame. Humber shot five-for-21 (23.8 percent) in the frame but was able to stifle Conestoga on the other end, allowing just four made baskets. Ivana Twumasi was key in her first game back for the Hawks, as she led the team in the second, scoring six of her nine points in the quarter.

The Hawks began the second half with a small lead that Conestoga quickly went to work on, as they tied things up halfway through the third. Humber would immediately answer with a run of their own, thanks to consecutive threes by Brittney English and Kia Watt to retake the lead. The Hawks seemed to take off from there, ending the quarter on a 13-2 run as they entered the final quarter up by 11.

Humber kept their foot on the gas in the fourth putting the game away, as their lead grew to a 17 late in the quarter. In the end, Humber remained undefeated on the season defeating the Conestoga Condors, 68-54.
