St. Clair Drops Fanshawe in Women’s Basketball Rivalry Game

Windsor, ON – In the latest episode of their OCAA West Division rivalry the St. Clair College Women's Basketball team bested Fanshawe College (London) Friday night at the SportsPlex by a score of 79-73.  The Saints evened their regular season record at 3-3 with two games remaining on the road before the semester break.

A tight matchup in the early stages saw the teams trade the lead several times before St. Clair was able to pull ahead 22-19 after the first quarter.  The Saints used some strong shooting (43%) and a few small runs in the second quarter to increase their advantage to 47-39 by halftime.  Scoring cooled in the third quarter but St. Clair was able to open their largest lead of the game (54-41) early in the frame.  Fanshawe used a 10-0 run to close the gap, but the Saints still managed keep them down 63-51 entering the fourth.  Fanshawe clawed to within 76-71 with under two minutes to go but St. Clair held on down the stretch. 

The Saints had three scorers reach the 20-point plateau led by Shae-Lyn Murphy (Windsor, ON/Holy Names) who recorded a game high 24 but added 6 rebounds and 5 assists.  Alyssa Lucier (Wallaceburg, ON) continued her strong play netting 22 points to go with 4 steals.  Janae Smith (Warren, MI) had her best game of the season scoring 21 points and nearly reached a double-double with 9 rebounds for St. Clair.  Lauren Overeem (Brantford, ON) was impressive on the boards with 14 rebounds and chipped in with 8 points for the Saints.

St. Clair overcame Fanshawe's overall shooting from the field (42%) by making four more triples and getting to the charity stripe while converting 82% (18-of-22) of their chances.

Renee Maat (Oakville, ON) and Sydney Kendellen (London, ON) each scored 16 points for Fanshawe in the loss. 

The Saints will be at Redeemer University (Ancaster) on Saturday and finish their weekend road trip on Sunday at Conestoga College (Kitchener).
