LANCERS FALL JUST SHY OF PLAYOFF SPOT

The women's volleyball team fell just shy of a play off spot after playing their final game in Peterborough over the weekend.

The Lancers finished their season with a pair of wins over the Georgian Grizzlies and the Knights, but it still wasn't enough to propel them into a play off position. The Lancers took down the Grizzlies in 4 sets, winning the first 25-22, dropping set 2 23-25 then winning the next two 27-25 and 25-14. Fourth year Lancer Jillian Hoftyer dominated the game with 24 points, including 9 blocks, 6 aces and 9 kills while fellow veteran athlete Alicia Orsborne recorded 9 kills, 2 aces and block for 12 points.

In their final game, it was the veterans that came through for the Lancers again in their sweep of the Knights with set scores 25-14, 25-16 and 25-21. Third year utility player Raven Maracle lead the game in points with 5 kills, 7 aces and a block for a total of 13 points, followed by Hoftyzer who racked up 10 points of her own.

The Lancers missed out on a playoff spot by 1 set. The final spot in the playoffs came down to a 4 way tie between the La Cite Coyotes, Georgian Grizzlies, Seneca Sting and the Lancers. With all teams holding a 4-6 record, the tie break went to the Coyotes and Grizzlies who filled the 6th and 7th spot in the standings.

With regular season games now in the books, Hoftyzer, who had a fantastic all around year for the Lancers, finished with 255 total points, putting her in second place in the OCAA. She also sits at the top of the league in total blocks with 63; an impressive 22 blocks ahead of the second place athlete.

Despite injuries and other obstacles that consistely showed up in the team's path, the Lancers fought a hard battle all season played tough right to the end. Graduating athletes Alicia Orsborne, Geneva Bloemen, Lorraine Spellman, Jillian Hoftyzer and Raven Maracle have been incredibly additions to the Lancers during their time with the team and will be incredible missed as the team moves forward.

Good luck to all graduating athletes in future endeavors, and congratulations on a hard fought season.
