HUSKIES FALL JUST SHORT OF COME FROM BEHIND WIN

HUSKIES FALL JUST SHORT OF COME FROM BEHIND WIN

George Brown Huskies Women's Volleyball gave the packed crowd at St James Athletic Centre something to cheer about on Wednesday night versus the visiting Georgian Grizzlies. After dropping the first set 18-25 to an efficient Grizzlies squad out of the gates (7 kills, 1 error, 12 attacks), the home team would keep their composure and pull through with a 25-23 second set win to tie things up.

Their second set was energized by 10 kills and a series of digs, notably from rookie libero Yuna Miyake who would finish with 21 on the night. An energy that has been a bit hard to maintain over the last few games, comments Head Coach Daphne Choi. "We were dealing with injury still, but did not give up against Georgian. We've tried to remember our goal: always get a bit better, and we're doing that. So this is one of those cases where a loss can still feel like a bit of a win."

Miyake has made a name for herself so far this season, as the freshman currently sits in 6th place in the OCAA in total digs with 77.

The third set would then swing back into the Grizzlies favor, who silenced the Huskies' normally high powered offense and limited them to only four kills. George Brown is currently 3rd in the league in kills and 2nd in total attacks, but could not produce that offense consistently enough which would lead to Georgian taking the set 20-25.

Yet again, the Huskies would dig deep and find a way to battle back. Down by as much as four points midway through the fourth set, the Huskies once again kept their cool and slowly chipped away at the Grizzlies lead. Eventually, coming from behind to win the set in dramatic 25-23 fashion to force a final fifth set to the roar of the home crowd behind them.

That momentum carried over into the final set as well, with both teams jockeying back and forth for the lead. The Grizzlies would come away with a slight advantage at the midpoint of the set, and the Huskies could not recover. Making a final push down 11-14 to close the gap to 13-14, that's as close as they would get with Georgian closing out the set 13-15 to take the game 3-2 (18-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-23, 13-15).

Up next, the Huskies are home again next Wednesday November 27th when they host Centennial (1-7) at the St James Athletic Centre. Game time scheduled for 6pm.
