Women’s Basketball Fall in OCAA Opener

Windsor, ON – The St. Clair College Women's Basketball team started slowly in their OCAA West Division opener on their SportsPlex court Wednesday night and fell by a score of 71-57 to Lambton College (Sarnia).

The Saints stumbled out of the gate and were down 8-0 to start the game allowing Lambton to jump ahead 21-11 by the end of the first quarter.  The most competitive frame was the second, but St. Clair was still on the wrong side as Lambton held a 33-22 advantage at the halftime intermission.  The Saints had their strongest output in the third quarter (18) but so did the visitors (24) who were ahead 57-40 entering the fourth.  Early in the final quarter Lambton moved ahead by as much as 25 points and even a late push only made the outcome more respectable.

Transfer guard Janae Smith (Warren, MI) nearly recorded a double-double in her St. Clair SportsPlex debut scoring 14 points to go with 9 rebounds.  Shae-Lyn Murphy (Windsor, ON/Holy Names) scored 12 points while Alyssa Lucier (Wallaceburg, ON) rounded out the double figure scoring for the Saints with 11.

St. Clair did manage to make 11 triples in the contest but only shot 25.7% overall in the game and untimely turnovers allowed Lambton to get extra possessions that turned into easy buckets.  The Saints were outscored 40-12 in the paint and 22-6 in points off the bench.

Breanna Pretty (Sarnia, ON) scored a team high 14 points for Lambton in the win.

St. Clair will host Niagara College (Welland) on Nov. 5th in their next regular season game which tips at 4:00pm.
