CCAA hosts open conference play with victory over Seneca

OSHAWA, Ont. - The Durham Lords men's soccer team began their 2019 campaign with a 2-0 victory on Saturday at home against the Seneca Sting.

It was the visitors who had the first chance of the game when Dylan Campbell made a nice run in the box and was fouled by goalkeeper Kevon Grant (Oshawa, Ont.) and earned a penalty. He then stepped up and saw his effort ring off the underside of the crossbar and bounce out.

Freshman Joshua Lee (Ajax, Ont.) came close shortly after, but his shot was well saved.

The opening goal of the game came in the 34th minute when captain Colin Reilly (Whitby, Ont). lofted a free kick into the box, which LeRohne Young (Oshawa, Ont.) got on the end of to notch his first goal for the Lords.

Just two minutes later it was Campbell again who was at the heart of the Sting's attack. The winger did well to fend off two Lords defenders before his low shot was saved by Grant.

Heading into the break it was 1-0 for Durham, with each team having two attempts on target.

The second goal came in the 57th minute when Ryan Cullen (Pickering, Ont.) headed the ball back to Marcellus Paul (Courtice, Ont.) from a corner and Paul smashed the ball home from close range into the left corner.

Jose Flores (Ajax, Ont.) nearly got a third for Durham in the 77th minute when he found space in the box following some nice footwork, but his curling effort hit off the crossbar.

Grant was at it once again late in the game as he made his sixth save when he came off his line quickly and made himself big to deny the Sting a way back into the game.

The Lords will be back in action on Friday, hoping to keep up their winning ways on the road against the George Brown Huskies. Kick off is at 8:30 p.m.
