OSHAWA, Ont. – It wasn't expected, but the Durham College women's volleyball team was swept at home on Thursday night by the Centennial Colts to end the opening half of their season.
The Colts won the first set narrowly, 25-22, but had it relatively easy from there as they won 25-19 and 25-13 to win their third straight-set victory of the season.
Cassidy Nicholson-Clarke (Ajax, Ont.) and
Madison McBurney (Whitby, Ont.) each finished with four blocks, while
Allyson Terwillegar (Enniskillen, Ont.) led the Lords offence with eight kills.
On the other end of the court the Colts were led by Mari Pikkov's match-high 18 points, including match highs of 15 kills and three aces. Elizabeth Bowers finished with 10 kills, but it was Shanelle Woods who tied Durham's Nicholson-Clarke and McBurney with four blocks in the match.
For the first time since November 14, 2015 against the Canadore Panthers in North Bay, the Lords also had no service aces in a match. Their lowest total so far this season was three against Algonquin.
The loss brings a close to the 2017 portion of the season for Durham College, with their next action slated for the Adidas Cup at the CRWC. The tournament runs from Jan. 5-7, including 10 teams from the OCAA, Sherbrooke of the RSEQ and the CMU Blazers of the Manitoba College Athletic Conference (MCAC).
Durham will then get back into conference play in Toronto against the George Brown Huskies on January 17 before hosting the Georgian Grizzlies at the CRWC on Tuesday, Jan. 23.
