Durham earns back-to-back wins

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - The Durham College women's soccer team claimed back-to-back victories for the first time this season dropping the Fleming Knights 4-1 on the road on Thursday night.

Conceding a goal to the Knights in the opening minute, the Lords rebounded quickly to dominate possession and scoring chances, outshooting Fleming 11-3 in shots on goal.

Durham scored two quick markers within three minutes of each other to take the lead back from Fleming in the opening frame. Madison Haigh (Bowmanville, Ont.) scored the Lords opening goal in the 32nd minute, before Milinda Roblero (Pickering, Ont.) knocked in the game-winner in the 35th.

Just before the halftime whistle, the Lords earned a free kick for one more opportunity on the Fleming net. Fourth-year captain MacKenzie Barry (Ajax, Ont.) delivered a strong kick into a crowd where second-year striker Cory Lapointe (Whitby, Ont.) capitalized for her eighth goal of the season. The marker sets a new single-season career-high for the young playmaker and lifts her into third place in the OCAA scoring race.

Haigh would round out the scoring for the Lords, recording her second goal of the night on an incredible effort from distance in the 58th minute.

"Best goal of the season by a Durham Lord player this season, no question," said head coach Alex Bianchi. "Maddy got all of that ball when she stuck it, some would say it was a pistol, but it it was even better, it was a missile."

Lords goalkeeper Jenna King finished the night with two saves, facing little pressure from the Knights thanks to strong defensive play from Barry and 2017 OCAA rookie of the year Bailey Colangelo (Whitby, Ont.).

"We're happy with the result as we accomplished what we needed to do tonight, but not at all happy with giving up a goal like we did 34 seconds into the game because we were half asleep," said Bianchi.

Durham will next welcome the St. Lawrence Vikings to Vaso's Field this Sunday, Sept. 30. Kick off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
  Overall Record: 6-5-1 (W-L-D)
